I have a beautiful little 3 year old granddaughter with whom I am very close. I have other grandchildren, boys and girls both, but none have a bond as close as this little one and myself. She immediately took to me as an infant even though I did not see her regularly. I would be so pleased when she would come to me so easily and sit quietly with me. When she was still in diapers and just beginning to speak, I had the delicate opportunity to change her diaper. While I was doing this, she looked directly into my eyes and said, "I'm your Mum." It startled me a bit. I began to wonder if there was a possibility that she could be my own deceased mother, whom I loved so dearly and still miss to this day. My mother was also my best friend and my partner in so many things, including the raising of my children. This little granddaughter and I share a bonding somewhat similar to my mother and myself. I really don't know how it began. I have other grandchildren whom I see on a regular basis but none have this same feeling. Recently, my son, her father and his wife, bought a house directly across the street from where I grew up. The house they purchased was from a dear friend of my mother's. It was ironic, how they chose this house to buy. They had been looking for a house for two years. They had put offers on other houses but nothing worked out for them. This beautiful bungalow was practically handed to them. Now today as I sat in the living room of that house with this little granddaughter, I pointed out the window to my old home and explained to her that I had lived there when I was a little girl and pointed out my bedroom window to her. She replied that her daddy lived there. I told her he had when he was a baby. She told me that she lived there too. I laughed and told her that she couldn't have because her daddy was just a little baby when we lived there. She insisted that she did. She emphatically said, "I was the Mommy." I told her she wasn't and she repeated several times, matter of factly, that 'she was the mommy'. My son overheard her and asked her, "If you were the Mommy, who was the Daddy?" She replied, "Nobody!" This was, in fact, true, because only my mother, my sister and I lived there for several years. My mother was divorced at that time and we rarely saw our father. Never in that house anyway. Now we are wondering if my granddaughter could very well be my mother. Do parted souls look for family to be near? Is there anything that we should do?
