Black Hat

.....I have the custom of lying in bed until I am almost asleep, at which point I direct my mind to
something in particular. Sometimes when I do this, I see clear images which presumably refer to
whatever or whomever I've directed my mind towards. When I used this method to think about a
past life, I obtained a number of images which described a man who lived in the 19th century,
probably in the U.S.

.....As a very young man, he wore a uniform that was all black, and included a large black hat. As
a man perhaps in his thirties, he did not wear a uniform and had a full beard. At this age he was
involved along with some other men in exploring a rugged, mountainous area. As a man
perhaps 50 or 60 years of age, he wore pin striped pants, and had a long mustache that
was probably waxed on the ends, and a trimmed chin beard. . At this time he was
living in the age when railroads crossed the land, but automobiles were not seen.
Also at this age he donned his old uniform, apparently as part of a get-together
in which he was honored for his past service in whatever organization he had belonged to.
The uniform was all black. It included a black overcoat. I saw nothing in the way of insignia
or brass buttons or anything of that sort. It was a nice looking
uniform but I think it was probably a field uniform, not a dress uniform.

The most distinctive part of the uniform was the very large black hat. It had a very
wide brim which was rigid and horizontal, it was not floppy or turned up or down. The crown of the hat was high and the sides of the crown were straight up, making a right angle with the brim. The top of the crown
was flat, not peaked. If seen from above, the top of the crown would have been oval in shape,
not circular.

.....I have used the internet to look at uniforms and hats, but have not found anything similar
to what I saw in the images. Perhaps someone can suggest the best way to research
uniforms. Naturally I am interested to find out if the uniform I saw in the images really existed.
I would say that the period in which the young man was wearing the uniform would have
been the early 1800s, or possibly the late 1700s.

Hi JWal and welcome to the forum :)

Thanks for sharing your memories of this man. Now, my immediate thought was that perhaps he was a chimney sweep? Although I can't give you a link the chimney sweep-uniforms, however in the past life regression-section of the forum there is a sticky on guidelines for research which also contains links :)

At the top of this section there is another sticky which is all about links for research. Maybe you can find something of interest through there that can help you decipher your memories :)

Hi JWal and welcome to the forum. Thank you for sharing your story with us and I hope you enjoy your time here. I am sorry that I cant offer any clues thats might be helpful about the uniform but maybe others might be able to help.

Kind Regards

Thank you, Sunniva and Kay for responding. Considering the various images I saw, I believe the black outfit must have been a military uniform, even though admittedly an odd one. I don't quite understand Sunniva's saying "While I sneeze, I hope".

As far as I know sternuo - sternuere also means to lie down.

But I don't want to get involved into such confidental issues; the rest of my interpretation might be the product of my Freudian mind.

Before this thread is completely highjacked by speculations about the meaning of my signature let me just say: It's nothing dirty ;) : angel

Now, please bring this thread back on subject. :D

Look in the liabrary of congresses daguerrotype photos collections. Also the daguarrean society. I'm sure you'll find exactly what your looking for in there.

JWal, the first impression I got was "regulator", or a private sheriff/lawman...usually enforcing some wealthy individual's law. That sort of occupation would fit the time frame in the pre-automobile, post-railroad western US. As for the clothing being a uniform, I have no sense of any sort of military outfit fitting that description and a regulator could wear anything that fit their sense of authority.
