Will We Retain What We've Learned About Our PL's?

I thought it might be interesting to mention how or what a dream warning/block feels like to me. You may have experienced something similar at some point (or maybe not).

In the dream I was seeing a landscape. It was very hazy and almost black and white, as if seen through a mist or possibly seen during some of the late Winter/Early Spring weather conditions I experienced when I lived in Rochester, NY. However, this was no landscape I had seen before and didn't feel like my usual dreams (which are typically in fairly vivid color). There was something that looked like a wall of trees in the middle distance extending partially across my field of view with barren fields forming the background beyond this. In between was a somewhat ragged line of spaced trees that appeared to be Poplars. Someone next to me was talking about removing the Poplars to improve the view. In the meantime, I was starting to shift into a lucid dreaming mode and was questioning what I was seeing, as I have had similar conversations with my wife about similar matters, but this was definitely not my yard or trees. I have the impression of something almost like a Roman Villa.

At that point, I had a sudden new dream break in. It was in my usual full color with the typical fairly unusual symbolism I associate with my dreams, but with a new and unusual symbol thrown in: T-Rex as in "Jurassic Park" (alone and in groups). The dream came in with a completely different quality, it almost seemed like one of those occasions where you are listening to radio and the government suddenly breaks in, takes over the channel and broadcast, and says this is a test of the national emergency broadcasting system. I could stretch it out, and discuss in detail the two scenarios pictured, but for the most part I think the details of peoples' dreams are only interesting to them and their shrink. The point is that T-Rex is not something I typically dream about. I only remember one prior dream featuring a T-Rex and I couldn't figure out what it meant at the time. All I knew while I was in my "emergency broadcast warning system dream" was that these figures were very problematic, destructive and scary.

I usually can figure out the symbols that come up in my dreams. They often embody figures of speech or fairly simple ideas. So, I thought about what a Jurassic Park T-Rex meant to me when I woke up: Something big, scary, and dangerous from the distant past that is long-since dead, but is brought back to life by artificial means. Well, that was it for that memory. So it goes.

The question of whether or not we will remember PL experiences and learning has been pretty well covered in this thread. I concur with those that say that a part of us has full memory, and the incarnate has some memories. I have three or four examples in my own life that fit in this thinking. As I wrote elsewhere, I recalled being able to freely leave my body at the age of five and was a bit upset that I then felt ‘stuck’ in my current body. A few years later I had a déjà vu experience while looking in the direction of the sun; I recalled seeing two suns while looking as I was doing at that time; those two memories are from more than seventy years ago, yet they are still strong. The third experience was much more recent and is a bit more personal; I was in a relationship where I was stroking my partner’s arm and she became a bit anxious, I asked her to trust me and continued. I had no idea what I was doing and yet knew exactly what I was doing – never done that in this lifetime before that (or since)! So, yes I believe we remember things from a PL but, it might not make sense or be helpful.

I also think that having too many memories get in the way of new experiences since things that are remembered create a ‘learned response’ that would interfere with ‘new learning’.

I have been an ironworker walking on beams, channel-iron, or joist high off the ground without fear (although that was years ago), yet bugs have always scared me; my wife sometimes has to come to my rescue when I am unable to dispose of a critter. I have been able to overcome about everything else, including public speaking, but a big spider, walking-stick, or mantis still elicits fear. (I do not want to go back and experience the PL that caused that!)

Memories from my PLs have been interesting, I have abilities in this lifetime that have helped me, some memories that are important in shaping my beliefs, and a mild phobia that I consider a nuisance. So, I think it is as good plan to not remember much.

Hi Ken,

I think the question of how much can be remembered about or from PLs without detracting and distracting from the present life is an interesting one. Certainly the fresh start aspect of having minimum memories has its points. My inner "monitor" certainly seems to agree with you in leaning towards the de minimis end of the spectrum, though I'm not certain whether it is for the same reasons you specify. From my standpoint, I think it is partly protective (whether the protection is needed or not) and partly to keep me from distraction in terms of what I'm here to do in this life (which is probably included in the reasons you specify). From the both standpoints, it makes me wonder whether I myself "set the level" on PL memory before I came here, perhaps with these issues in mind.

However, overall, I can't see that more PL memory is always adverse across-the-board as there seem to be many on this board with a lot of PL memory who do not seem to be adversely impacted. This leads to a lot of speculation by all of us: why some and not others?

If you could do what many would love to do and that is... you could start again knowing what you know now, would you both take that option?

If I had started this incarnation with what I now think that I know it would be quite different. School and collage would have been different, my association with my parents (and just about everyone) would have been different. I would not have dealt with whatever karma or agreement that was made in the same way and therefore not progressed as I believe I have.

Short answer - no it would not have been good.

I'm sorry but it's my mistake again for not explaining myself properly.. I meant remembering and taking with you the physical memories of what you have learnt from this incarnation with you to the next. . I don't want to change the subject of this thread, but its really all about how much influence if any do previous lives help us in the physical when the physical cannot remember most of the lessons previously learnt?

After my post, I had something to eat and came back to the book I was reading and immediately came upon a relevant passage.

Quote from The God Theory by Bernard Haisch – “…because the experience of physicality retains its infinite potential only when it is not fully defined. Our incomplete knowledge of physical reality enriches our human experiences by maintaining its novelty, its unanticipated outcomes, its newness. It allows us to each to live our lives as a great adventure.”

Also remember that we see incarnations differently; I see them as "school" for Soul growth whereas you seem to see them as attempts at perfection of the physical.

Ken.. There is an important difference in what I believe and your interruption of what I believe

It is not about the perfection of the physical in real terms. Its about the pure self/spirit evolving to take over the physical taking with them all of their abilities and memories into the physical creating a pure spiritual physical identity The pure spiritual is dominate in creating the perfect physical entity

Its the physicalizing of the spiritual

That has to happen because there is only physical life. As I have said before our destiny is not to just exist in the spiritual No matter what spin is put on it that is all the spiritual is. It is a place to exist not to live . You do not live in the spiritual you exist there. You must have a physical body to be in the image of our creator. That's in the bible and I don't even believe in god. But it tells us all a real truth about ourselves and who we are and who we will be and our destiny... The real truth about us is in the bible in so many ways, but it all got messed up by those seeking power in the physical

Just a note on how much anyone remembers, it seems to be a common thread (and one I agree with) that we will only remember as much as the Subconscious knows we can handle. How much we can handle will be dependent on many things, such as biology, genetics and current-life/past life experience. If you cannot psychologically handle a traumatic memory, you will not remember it, until such time as you have the 'emotional resilience' to deal with it. Such time may come in the current life, a future life, or even not at all. For example, I've been working on remembering my past lives for nearly three years now, but its only in the last 6 months that I've remembered terrible things explicitly (namely two suicides and the emotional context that lead to them), rather than just as vague memories or general feelings. If I had remembered these things back at the start I don't feel I would have had the emotional resilience to deal with them as well as I have now. Don't get me wrong, remembering them has been difficult and is still a tough road, but the Subconscious knows that I can deal with them now, so now must be the right time for them to surface.

This last post by helz belz is typical of the posts on this forum that leave me confused

When it is claimed "I" remembered those things that lead me in two previous lives to commit suicide, who is "I"?

My understanding is all of our physical "I's" die never to return. So those physical entities that committed suicide are dead and have not and will never return. Leaving only the spiritual "I" to reincarnate and continue on

Are you saying your "spirit/soul I" cannot cope with the trauma of what the physical bodies it occupied did. Or is "I the spirit/soul you" suicidal?

The spiritual me has all the memories and knowledge it has leant from all of it's incarnations both good and bad stored within him. I hate to think how many of those memories are terrifying and shocking. The only physical "I's" that have relevance to me are those to come

John, the 'I' that couldn't deal with those experiences, it was the physical 'I', the 'I' that was living at the time of those experiences. When that body and mind ended their lives, my soul/spirit/eternal part, left and went to where souls go, be that Heaven/Bardo/somewhere else (where that is I don't claim to know). You are right in that those physical incarnations are gone, never to return as they were, but from my experience, their memories, their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears, are remembered by the eternal consciousness soul/spirit that experienced those things. All things the soul/spirit experiences whilst in physical form leaves a mark on the consciousness of that soul, which can manifest in subsequent lives. So even though the physical body is dead and gone, the emotional turmoil continues. In my view, we cannot really understand our present and our futures unless we also try to understand our pasts. My current life (the combination of soul/biology/genetics/experience) at this point in time is now ready to deal with the trauma of those previous lives, most likely because those issues weren't dealt with sufficiently in previous incarnations.

Hi Helz

That did clear up some of my confusion. What I cannot understand is when you say the emotional turmoil continues, do you mean that is within your soul/spirit or the current physical you that never experienced these events?

It's interesting you talk about the consciousness of the soul. I believe the physical and spiritual consisiouness is one and the same. It has dual purpose and that is the connection between the spiritual and physical

What doesn't add up to me it appears you don't believe your soul/spirit can cope or sort these things out for themselves. That must be done by a physical entity they now occupy, who's only connection to those events is the soul/spirit themselves. So who has the problem? The soul/spirit you or your current physical entity?

Even if this physical entity does sort it out will that be to the satisfaction of your soul/spirit so the next physical entity they occupy will not have these same problems?

Hi John,

I'm not sure if I can fully answer your questions, but I'll give it a go.

when you say the emotional turmoil continues, do you mean that is within your soul/spirit or the current physical you that never experienced these events?
Well, obviously my physical body hasn't literally experienced these things, those things were experienced by my soul/spirit/consciousness/whatever you want to call it, but in a different physical body. But then, because of cell-turnover in my own current body (the constant replacing of old cells with new ones), technically my current physical body hasn't experienced anything older than the last few months (or years for the bone cells); just because something happened before my current body-cells were produced doesn't mean that experience doesn't have an affect on me. The consciousness is the key, things affect the consciousness through the body, and the consciousness is what moves from life to life. So, just because something happened to me in a past life, in a different physical body, doesn't mean it doesn't still cause me emotional pain now to remember those events, love and miss those times and people deeply, at a soul and consciousness level.

I believe the physical and spiritual consisiouness is one and the same.
I tend agree on this point, that the consciousness of the physical and spiritual are the same. But, I have heard people talk of the other side (ie, the spiritual consciousness) as being more expanded than physical consciousness (constrained as it is by a body and brain), so although not having much experience of the other side myself, I am open to the nature of consciousness there being somewhat different to consciousness in the physical

What doesn't add up to me it appears you don't believe your soul/spirit can cope or sort these things out for themselves. That must be done by a physical entity they now occupy, who's only connection to those events is the soul/spirit themselves. So who has the problem? The soul/spirit you or your current physical entity?
I am afraid this is where my ability to answer falters. I would like to believe that the soul can figure these things out on the other side, but all I can extrapolate from is my experiences, which show me that issues I have had in previous lives can still affect me in the current life. I don't know why these things are not sorted out on the other side. I've read that on the other side, the physical realm and all its issues do not have the same importance as they do here in the physical. Others have said that we reincarnate in order to learn and grow from our past experiences, therefore these things aren't 'problems' but 'challenges' to be overcome and learnt from. Personally I am not sure why things are as they are, what matters most to me is that I have remembered experiences from the past which manifest as issues in the present and I am dealing with them now to the benefit of my current and future lives, and the souls I share those lives with.

Hi Helz

Your reply was great. It was precise and honest. I think we are on the same wave link, maybe not in our beliefs but how we go about them

I see the physical me and the spiritual me as two separate entities but connected. John Tat has never lived a previous life.

How could have John Tat in this the 21st century been a monk in the 16th century? That is no possible

I call the spiritual side of me "Billy" so I'm always separate from John Tat. Billy is the real me who reincarnates and continues on. He has always shared his consciousness with each physical entity he has occupied and that is his connection to each physical body he has occupied. It is logical that the same consciousness has greater impact on Billy than it does on John Tat

I have had only one exposure to a previous physical body Billy occupied. But that has lead me to a greater understanding of what I believe it's all about

Last time Billy occupied a physical body he died during WW!! when his plane crashed into a river. It was a traumatic death for that physical entity. Billy the same as all of his memories and knowledge gained from previous lives learnt plenty from that incarnation and as always has it all recorded (without a better description) on his reality DVD

Finding out how that physical body died did have some effect on me. Much the same as a sad movie will effect you for a week or two. But that was not me so it was the same as watching a movie

Because of my beliefs it's difficult for me to understand why a one off physical entity who is currently living in the physical would be traumatize by what happened to other physical entities that have no physical connection to him. The only connection is the spiritual. As you say you do not understand why you spirit/soul cannot sort it out for themselves. Billy does not have any of those problems. John Tat's biggest problems are coping with his physical life

Helz:

Thanks for your great posts. They all are rewarding to read and carefully written. I'm more-or-less in agreement with your comments that we will remember when we're able to cope with the memory. I think that is definitely part of what I am experiencing, and it definitely makes me wonder what is hiding back there. However, I'm not sure that our subconscious is always as wise or full-proof as your statements seem to portray. In the main, probably, but there always seem to be exceptions anywhere there are living systems involved.

Ken:

Thanks for the interesting quotes. I agree with most of them. Others go a bit farther than I'm ready to go at this point.

Also, going back to a prior post--I also had some OOB experiences when I was around 20 and exploring things of that type. There is not much to report, as the ones I initiated consciously were brief and I didn't get very far. The last was striking and very scary. I remember it pretty clearly after all of these years. I had apparently left my body while asleep--which seemingly is not that uncommon. In the normal course of things I doubt I would recall anything, but I was attacked by something before I got very far from my bedroom--which scared the %^&* out of me, and made me plunge back into my body and wake up, sitting up suddenly in bed, and preserving the memory. Since then I have made no further attempt at such a thing.

You also made me very curious by mentioning a PL memory featuring 2 suns. I'd like to get more of your thoughts on that.

John:

I probably should address you as "Billy" and will do so for the rest of this post. So, Billy: It is you acting and living through John. The body bearing the name "John" does a lot to affect your consciousness and impact your decisions, but you are still the one that is ultimately "pushing the buttons" and experiencing the consequences via your surrogate (or outer layer, which goes by the name: John). No perfect analogies exist, but maybe it could be compared to entering a world wherein you could not otherwise exist and act clothed in a spacesuit that made it possible for you to live and act there. All you see and do is mediated and made possible by the suit--which is all anyone else sees, and which limits your actions, perceptions and abilities at the same time it enables you to live here. Eventually the "space suit" wears out and you go elsewhere to return in a different space suit which is given a different name, but you are still the one inside! I know it is a bad analogy, but its the best I can do at a pinch.

Helz:

One other thing in terms of something that may be hiding back there in the memories I (seemingly) don't want to have. This is something you made me wonder about when you mentioned suicide.

I have only one PL where I have recovered much in the way of memories or information. It appears to relate to a niece of Madam Blavatsky named Vera, who married another Theosophist named Charles Johnston (died 1931). Johnston was the son of a famous Irish politician as well as being a friend of some of the other brilliant young Irishmen of the day, including the poet Yeats. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Johnston_%28Theosophist%29). Both Vera and Charles wrote articles for theosophical publications, but Charles is definitely the dominant party in terms of being a writer. Consequently, I have been able to get a fair amount of information from the internet as well some pictures related to both.

Nonetheless, Vera's death is something of a mystery--something that I even found discussed by Theosophists trying to locate information. I found many references to her husband's death both in Theosophical publications and in the NY Times, and even information on her sisters' deaths, but none on hers even though she (like Charles) was a prominent person in that movement (as well as being Blavatsky's niece). It appears to have taken place when she was only about 59, and I even tracked down and acquired a photo of her tombstone. But no particulars or published information anywhere in terms of where, how, why.

The lack of information bothers me a great deal (when I allow it to). It also makes me wonder whether it was one of those things that had to be "hushed up" at the time, as would be the case with a suicide. Perhaps in due course I will find out the answer.

This leads me to wonder what that would lead to - everlasting life in physical form? What would be the purpose of that?

You do not live in the spiritual you exist there.
I do not agree with that, what makes you think that when you are back "home" you do nothing?

You must have a physical body to be in the image of our creator. That's in the bible and I don't even believe in god.
This "In the image of" thing is a puzzle as it leads to the conclusion that God is both human and male. I think that the book "Animal Farm", which I love, illustrates where that came from (ie. if pigs wrote the bible, God would look remarkably like a pig).

S&S,

There is not much to say about my memory of there being two suns. I had a deja vu experience when I was five or six and told my parents about it. They told me that what I described was impossible in what I recall as a polite manner. It is still strong in my memory.

Hi Ken and Billy/John,

As a point of general interest, I can tell you that most theologians and Christians throughout history have not interpreted the statement that humans were made in the image and likeness of God in a physical way, but in quite the opposite way. The Bible states that God is a spirit. Hence, to be made in God's image and likeness is taken to mean that we are also, fundamentally, spirits too--with attributes similar to God, but finite rather than infinite in nature. We are finite copies only--not the original.

In terms of some type of physical everlasting bodily existence being the ultimate goal of life, few concepts have been argued so vehemently in Christianity as the concept of what constitutes the "resurrection" body discussed in Corinthians 15. These ideas have varied between something very physical but perfected to something completely "spiritual" in nature. My idea has shifted quite a bit over time: away from anything physical or merely "spiritual" in any kind of locale confining way towards something more "flexible" in terms of its powers and locus. Some theologians I have been reading lately do not appear to even consider this a reference to an individual "body" at all, but instead to be a reference to the corporate body of believers--i.e., the rising of the body of the "new Israel" after the destruction of the "old Israel" in 70 AD.

Ken,

On the 2 suns point, have you ever speculated on this? Its very SciFi, which is one of the reasons for my interest. Some people claim to do or have done future life progressions, though the results seem to be even more dicey and less consistent than past life regressions.

That's a good symbol! It is normal to be a bit apprehensive about uncovering past life memories, not knowing what you might find.

I have been remembering stuff since I was a little kid, so it just comes naturally to me. I don't really have to try to get 'flashbacks' they just happen. Although I will use meditation to get more details and context on something if it doesn't make sense.

I wouldn't say I never get upset about things. I do from time to time. But it usually passes before too long and I prefer to put up with a bit of emotional upheaval, because I like having the insights.

If something doesn't want to come, don't push it. Just leave it. It will come when it's ready. Sometimes trying too hard, and especially getting worked up about it, will be counter productive.

SeaAnd Sky

The spacesuit analogy was not far away. The problem is I'm many incarnations away from anything like that

It is wrongly assumed that spiritual memory functions in the same manner the physical brain does.

Since my source told me that the pure/spiritual me and them have been working together on compatibility between the two

It has been long hard and continuous.

You see it's not that we cannot remember in great detail and have memories of previous bodies our pure self/ spirit has occupied. The problem is, its trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The physical brain and spirit/soul memory work differently. When you think about it, that reality is simple to understand. It's knowing it to begin with that is the problem

It's only recently after working on compatibility I understand how different they are. I asked what are all of these previous life memories people have then? It was communicated that a little gets through that's all. Memory is different to influence, that is very significant and something little is talked about or understood

A curious thing happened yesterday during morning meditation. It was a productive meditation in terms of going deep. Breathing had dropped way down, mind focused in heart, and external awareness minimal as I attended to the prayer/meditation phrase I use most of the time these days as it repeated itself fading down into . . . quietness . . . and . . . stillness . . . and . . . Bang! A voice speaks where I am very clearly, and it was in my heart and not in my head or ears: YOU HAD CANCER. Not shouting, not terribly expressive, just matter-of-fact.

I came up to normal external focus levels like someone had just done a wet willy in my ear. What was that! It had nothing to do with anything I had been thinking about, but immediately brought to mind two very invasive biopsies I had within the last 7 years—which found no cancer. Did that mean that I had cancer, but it spontaneously went into remission before the biopsies? Wait a minute, was that “have” rather than “had” as in you NOW have cancer!!! “No, get a grip,” I think.

Later in the morning I recall mentioning the fact that I was bothered very much by not being able to find anything about my death in a possible PL on this thread and speculating about suicide. OK, so it was cancer rather than suicide I thought—if that’s what the voice is saying. (OTOH, I am wondering at this point why I can’t just have the kind of PL memories that count as “normal” on this board . . . why a voice inside during meditation?)

Anyhow, it was only today that I realized that the voice—if it was referring to this issue--may not have been referring to what, but to why—i.e., not what she/I died of, but why she/I committed suicide: You Had Cancer. That gave me pause . . . . I’ve seen some friends and loved ones die of cancer. Not pretty. But still only speculation until, and if, the actual memories come. Still, it might explain some things . . . .

Very interesting! That certainly sounds very feasible. You will know when it feels right. This could certainly be your 'subconscious', or 'higher being' or whatever you prefer, trying to allay your fears and concerns about what happened. If you died of cancer last time, or decided to end your own life because of it, either way, that would be perfectly understandable.

(OTOH, I am wondering at this point why I can’t just have the kind of PL memories that count as “normal” on this board . . . why a voice inside during meditation?)
Some people have past life recall via visual images. Some via feelings and some via verbal cues like this. Some have a combination. There is no 'normal' or 'correct' way.

To tie this back into the topic of the thread, the thing is that many people might have thoughts or images popping into their heads that are directly from past life knowledge, but they have no idea what it means or why it happens. So, most people repress or ignore these experiences and just assume that we don't remember anything, which I don't think is the case.

Hi S&S,

Sounds a lot like what I have experienced myself too. Sometimes when meditating, when my mind has become still (or as still as it will be!) a voice may speak in my mind in a similar way, like a very clear thought, but coming up out of the stillness of the meditation. When it happens for me, usually what it says bears a relation to a question or issue that has been playing on my mind, or answers a question I have asked before beginning the meditation. It was in this way that I found my past life regiment among other things. The manner of your last life death has been on your mind lately, so this would likely be why this information has bubbled up now.

As Tanguerra says, there is no such thing as a 'normal' way to receive past life information, everyone receives in their own way!

I posted this in the other thread too, but to save further threadjacking, here is a thread which discusses the different ways we receive past life information: How we perceive past life memories

Quite possible, I suppose, but when I was going to school, I hated it because I felt I had just there a short time earlier doing the same lessons. It seemed very repetitive for me. I felt like I had been to school several times already -- can't I just start over from where I last left off? Going to school that was built in the 1920s didn't help. I seemed to be counting the days and years until I could be free of it.

I believe everyone does receive past life information in different ways and for different reasons. I find it a fascinating subject to study. Seeing patterns in my own life memories tells me we are all on different paths to the same destination.
