Why Do Some People Paint Disabilities and Past Lives With Such a Broad Brush?

Ex: "All people with Down's Syndrome were suicide victims". or "All people with Autism were Holocaust victims".

Why paint such a broad brush over these disabilites? Doesn't anyone consider any other PL possibilites?

Suppose they were royalty and had to do things a certain way every day? Maybe they were a psychologist who wished to understand his/her patients?

Basically put, if you find yourself falling into the "all disabilites were x past lives" trap with yourself or your child, I ask you, stop and look again. It could very well be a different PL situation than what you think.

Because people feel better believing there is an easy explanation for everything that happens on Earth, especially if it involves a certain amount of suffering. So they make generalizations all the time and don't look further, they prefer to feel comforted believing, than actually delve deeper and get their hands dirty looking for other explanations. It's been always been this way, only centuries ago we put the blame on God or the gods, and now we put it on reincarnation beliefs like the "Law of Karma", no matter how many times researchers say there is no proof of karma in the thousands of cases thoroughly investigated.

The hardest thing for anyone to accept is that we simply don't know.

Sometimes things just happen, that's the price we pay for living in an imperfect world with free will and uncertainty. Sometimes it may be a part of our or someone else life plan. We just don't know. What we do have control over is how we interpret and react to things as a catalyst for positive change and insight.

Ex: "All people with Down's Syndrome were suicide victims"

I have not heard or read this one. Can you post a link?

I personally, would not be too hard on parents who have received a devastating diagnosis about their child and are going through a grieving process while they struggle to find answers. Being judgmental about what you think they believe, or what you think they ought to believe, is not very helpful.

I never once, not for one second, thought there was an easy answer to our situation, nor did I think that there was a one size - fits all explanation. I can tell you this much, the pain never completely goes away. The search for answers never completely goes away.

I have similar or the same disabilities lifetime to lifetime.

I don't know that we can really prove disabilities were caused by a past life, but I can see why some parents - as well as people with disabilities themselves - would ponder the possibility. I don't think there's really one universal answer, but I don't begrudge anyone for seeking them.

My only real concern is the idea that some people (and I'm not saying anyone on this forum has suggested it!!!!) might seek PL-related therapy as a replacement for other treatment that might still be necessary. We have to remember that while we associate a lot of disabilities and disorders with social and emotional behaviors, they're often very physical, just not in a way that's visible. So if a child has a chemical imbalance that causes him to act destructively, whether towards himself, others or both, PL regression can certainly be explored - however, he still needs medical treatment in this life. (I'm also not sure I believe a PL can cause a chemical imbalance; I do think, however, that PL issues could trigger certain behavior. Does that make sense?)
