What to do when hypnosis don´t "do the trick"?

Nyfiken

A few days ago I went to see a hypnotherapist to do a regression to a past life. I really tried and did what she told me, but nothing happened. I was very disappointed!

She told me some people need to practice and she gave me a CD to practice with at home.

I really want to experience past life memories and I practice with the CD, but no success yet.

Does anyone here on the forum had the same experience and did it work eventually for you?

Does anyone here have any ideas about what I can do to make it work?

I would be most grateful for any insights in this! Thanks!

Hi Nyfiken,

Welcome to the forum.

Some people are harder to hypnotise than others. This is usually because they have trouble just 'letting go' of their conscious mind and relaxing into it for whatever reason.

If you are not having any luck with the CD, you will need to practice general relaxation and a very simple version of meditation to learn what it is like to let your conscious mind just be quiet for a little while.

A simple exercise is to lie quietly some place where you wont be disturbed and think about nothing except your long, slow breaths. Count to 20 breaths (in and out = 1). Listen to the breaths, feel the air going into your lungs, notice the rise and fall of your chest, etc. Think of nothing else except the breath you are taking 'now'.

If you fall asleep, lose count or your mind wanders off to something else (boy this is dumb....what shall I have for dinner... nothing is happening.... am I doing it right.....what do I have to do at work tomorrow .... I'm bored already and I'm only up to 5.... etc. etc.) start again at number 1.

Once you can get to 20 breaths without being distracted you will be ready to try the CD again.

Hypnosis and meditation are just ways to access other parts of the mind which are not caught up in the usual day-to-day thought processes. Most of us are not used to using our minds in this way and can find it strange and awkward at first - just as ice-skating or dancing might feel strange or awkward if you had never done it before. But, with a bit of practice, anyone can get the hang of it fairly easily.

Nyfiken,

Welcome. My first thought is that perhaps you are trying too hard to make yourself have a regression. I would do what the hypnotherapist says, and try out the suggestions Tanguerra gave you. :)

Thank you very much for your replies!

I will definitely try the breathing excercise, and I know even in advance it will be hard for me ... :)

But you think there is hope for me?

Also I have one more question; when it "works", does it feel like you are experiencing past life memories with your "real" senses or is more like ordinary memorries, when it´s more like thinking about things in the past?

And, thanks again!

Maybe you need to work on your meditation skills in general. Maybe it's just difficult for you to get to the state of mind most people need to be in in order to regress.

I suggest you close your eyes, lay or sit in a comfortable position in a quiet room and allow your mind to clear. Tense and relax all of your muscles until you are so relaxed that you only feel yourself breathing. If you get to the point where you feel very heavy and sleepy, ask your mind to show you.

Keep in mind that you shouldn't force these memories. Your mind knows what you can handle. Maybe you're not ready to remember.

Hi Nyfiken, welcome to the forum :)

Sorry to hear that you're finding it difficult to remember your past lives, you're certainly not alone though, like tanguerra said, some people find it more difficult than others and it can take a lot of practice. The good news though is that everyone is capable of remembering their past lives and you've already received some great advice.

I think each of us experience our past life memories in our own way. For me personally, it can vary between a simple event in everyday life triggering just a feeling or emotion, to a full blown past life experience where I'm actually there, back in the moment and fully able to see everything in vivid detail, including colors, smells, touch, taste etc. My advice is, don't try to force these things to surface, because you'll be disappointed every time. Just take baby steps, don't 'expect' anything to happen, expectation will only distract you. Keep practicing and don't give up. Meditation is hugely beneficial to you whether you see your past lives or not, so however much practice it takes, you're never wasting your time ;)

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Chris :)

Hi Nyfiken! And, welcome to the Forum. My experience has been the same as yours. But, I stayed with the Forum and gained a few clues that were right under my nose. I have yet to experience the kind of regression that many other people here have experienced. But I've gained a great deal about myself by reading about their experiences. I think it really a matter of practice and getting away from distractions--something that is next to impossible for some of us. Good luck!

Just do the breathing exercise. You will see for yourself. It's hard but easy.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my questions!

I'll keep on practicing with my cd and the breathing technique and see where that leads me.

I usually get very relaxed in my body and muscles, sometimes to a point where I almost don't feel it. It's the mind or thoughts that I can't seem to turn off.

But a very unexpected and welcome side effect to my practicing is that my usually painful and headache-inducing tensions in my neck and shoulders are gone!

More than a good enough reason to continue in my opinion

There are many more benefits to meditation besides remembering your past lives, good luck :)

That's great! Yes, learning how to do simple relaxation techniques like this has many well known health benefits.

If you are having trouble 'turning your thoughts off' (you are not alone!) it is important not to get cross with yourself.

Getting annoyed or impatient is counterproductive to a state of serenity and 'nothingness'. :)

If your thoughts go running off in all directions like a dog chasing a rabbit, don't get upset with yourself, or worry that there is something wrong with you or whatever. This is very normal with beginners. Just gently bring your mind back to the task at hand - counting your breaths and nothing else. It takes a bit of practice to really get good at it, like everything, but the rewards are many.

A little update and a new question...

Hi and thanks again for your encouraging replies!

I keep practicing, and so far I think it is easiest to relax with the help of the CD. Nothing has happened so far with memories of previous lives, but I can remember my childhood very clearly and come to think of little details I have not thought about since then.

Now my new question: twice it has happened during relaxation ti the CD that my begin to (sorry my English fails me, but I think there is a word called this) flutter (?). My eyes move fast and my eyelids twitch. When this happens I feel dizzy and like I am moving fast, often sideways and my body gets a little tingly and I almost cannot feel my bed under me.

What is this? is it supposed to happen? should I consider this progress or am I having some kind of epileptic episodes? I do not shake and it stops if I open my eyes.

thank you again!

This is probably something to do with going into a sleep like state. I would not worry about it, although it must be distracting.

A good technique for people doing meditation and having any problems like this with their eyes, is to look 'up', but with the eyes closed. Try to roll the eyes back up into the head a little bit. If your eyes hurt when you do this, just 'imagine' looking up, it will achieve the same thing.

Something about doing this seems to relax the eyes and tells the brain that you are going into 'sleep' mode, I don't know why, but it seems to help switch 'wavelengths'.

That is good progress uncovering childhood memories. That is a very good start. Soon you will be getting very good at this!

Heja Nyfiken og velkommen!! Bra at se andre fra Skandinavien :D

The others have already given you excellent advice. It does take some practice, but baby steps! It will come, but don't force it :)
