Was I in New York 100 years ago?

Last year my son was googling his namesake, when he happened upon the photo of a Presbyterian Minister, who seems to have loaned me his face as well as my family name. My son was shocked to have discovered a photograph of the man who lived in New York around 1880–1918. When he showed the image to me, I couldn't believe what I saw, because the likeness was exact -- except for the clothes.

He was considered a social reformer after he challenged New York's Tammany Hall on February 14, 1892. Pointing to the hall’s political influence and their connection with the police, he noted that men fed upon the city while pretending to protect it saying, "While we fight iniquity, they shield and patronize it; while we try to convert criminals, they manufacture them..."

I had long admired many of his quotations without realizing that he shared my likeness, as well as a rare family name. The possibility that he was an ancestor was extremely remote, although he was distantly related. And his proclivity for tilting at windmills mirrored my own tendency of preaching against corruption, which has more than once put my life in jeopardy.

I also ended up working very near his church at Madison Square in New York City, which was a considerable coincidence, given the size of New York, plus the fact that that I came from deep in the midwestern United States. By some fluke I was at that location exactly 100 years from the day he challenged one of the world's largest and most corrupt political machines. A few years later I challenged three of this country's largest motorcycle clubs.

Yet, until I came to this Forum, I considered the synchronicity as nothing more than mere coincidence, especially when I discovered that he was only very distantly related. But, now I wonder. If it is reincarnation, I have no memory of those times. Instead of childhood dreams or memories, have I discovered a past life by some other means?

Thanks for sharing Nightrain, there certainly does seem to be far too many 'coincidences' there for it be .... a coincidence. Of course, nobody can confirm it for you, would you consider having a past life regression?

Hello Nighttrain. That is an incredibly interesting story. I whole heartedly believe that synchronous events and discoveries like this can point to past lives. Our paths seem to intersect these "clues." And I believe these bits of information are meant for us to see, as they awaken our soul.

Have you ever been through any type of regression with a certified therapist? This is certainly one way to explore these things deeper... it was very fruitful for me in putting a lot of synchronous and mysterious events together.

I would continue searching and observing, sounds like you're on the right track! And I would definitely take the time to write your thoughts in a journal. Keep track of them all. Then research this person from the past. Jeff Keene, a member here, also had a similar series of enlightening events AND a remarkable facial likeness. He wrote a book called "Someone Elses Yesterday." I highly recommend it. His name here on the forum is Stars3.

I look forward to hearing more of this journey.

Hi Nightrain,

Thank you for sharing. It might be interesting to do a regression - or even a meditation about that time period and see if you get positive results.

I have tried two separate sessions with people who claimed an ability of inducing regression--one, through guided meditation; and one, through hypnosis. Unfortunately, the hypnosis was a complete and utter waste of time and money. I was completely aware of my surroundings throughout, and never entered any kind of trance. I could have had the same experience talking to a stranger on the bus. That was a great disappointment, and I've never been able to trust or track down true practitioners of the art.

I subsequently researched the subject of hypnosis and discovered that most descriptions of hypnosis did not involve trances of any kind. And, technically, the word hypnosis is defined as hyper-consciousness, which describes my present and natural state.

However, the second person who used guided meditation to regress took me back to an Anatolian shepherd boy, who was beguiled by Greeks in order that they would steal the animals aboard their ships. They would have done better by kidnapping the boy along with his sheep and goats; for, to return without the village livestock meant banishment and a subsequent life with the wild dogs for the rest of his life. I would imagine that the village would not have fared well either, without their means of survival.

Whether this scenario was real or merely good material for a fictional novel, I don't know. I felt no more of a connection with this boy, than I did while reading Plato's allegory of the caves. I could not accept this story as anything but an allegory of something that lies deep within my soul. Whether it represents a real event or not is a mystery, until I find some means of verification, which may still involve being induced into a true deep hypnotic state. I can only depend upon the recommendations of someone who has witnessed deep trance hypnosis.
