sons story about a sisters death but he has no sister

Hi everyone. I have a five year old son who keeps telling the same story. He says he had a sister named Hershia and she died in a car accident in California. She was also pregnant and had a bad boyfriend. He has never in this lifetime had a sister and we have never lived in California. Also he talks about being pregnant with a baby in his belly and how he wants a baby sister so we bought a baby doll for him and he named her Hershia. We also have a cat who he named Hershia but since the cat is a male, we talked him into the name Hershey. Does anyone know how I can find out if there was an accident in California with a pregnant woman and her boyfriend with the name Hershia?????

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Have you tried running a search for California obituaries? Most papers and genealogical societies archive obituaries and many put them on the internet.

We did stumble upon a listing of all the obituaries in our local paper on rootsweb.com, we found it by going through the local library site. It lists by name and the day the obit was published.

Hopefully you can find the name and find someone helpful at a library in California. Luckily the name Hershia is very unique.

Good luck in your search.

your story struck my interest so i ran some searches but i cant find any one by that name has he mentioned a last name or maybe hershia was a nick name or a pets name of his sisters do you have any more info cause i'm seriously searching but i cant find much even though i had a certain fealing about the story

Kimberly,

My first inclination was to think your boy had the pronunciation of the name wrong. Remember that James Leininger didn't quite get the name Ruth right, but he was close and that's how the name sounded to him as he recalled memories. I was thinking maybe Hershia was really Dorthea or something that might sound close to a child. But now that I see that there IS in fact a Hershia in the 1910 census record, living in Los Angeles at that time, I am inclined to think this might be the person you're looking for in history. Like Sister Shelby I too have a strong feeling about this and feel in my gut that your boy is talking about real memories. That 1910 census SHOULD show who else was living in the house at the time, hopefully including a brother, and then you're onto something and its worth pursuing.

I've done research projects similar to this before, but as relates to genealogy and I've found that even when you hit a dead end in your search you come across information that makes the search worth your time and effort.

i have saved the census with hershia king mentioned above and would be happy to forward it to you...just email me if you'd like it. it is the only hershia i could find in my search that may fit.
missy :)
