This is a fun new song by Paul Simon. Approaches the subject of life after death with humor. Let me know what you think and if you know of others that sing about - past lifes, afterlife, reincarnation, etc. I enjoy hearing how music approaches the subject. :D

Deborah:

I listened to it and I liked it, it doesn't seem like his voice has changed at all.

I used to listen to, what was "Simon & Garfunkel" way back then, as a teenager, but then the two went on to separate careers.

Has anything been written as to whether he really believes in Reincarnation or did he just perform the song about it for record sales?

I'd be curious to find out though!

Excellent video and song. Loved it. The way he uses imagery - water and talks about his thoughts...ghosts (not sure what he was saying but either one works for me) like to travel. :) Thank you for posting it.

For Deborah:

"Growing Up"

folded in your fleshy purse

i am floating once again

while the muted sounds are pumping rhythm

all the walls close in on me

pressure's building wave on wave

'til the water breaks - and outside i go, oh

one dot, that's on or off, defines what is and what is not, one dot

two dot, a pair of eyes, a voice, a touch, complete surprise, two dot

growing up, growing up,

looking for a place to live . . .

my ghost likes to travel so far in the unknown

my ghost likes to travel so deep into your space

three dot, a trinity, a way to map the universe,

three dot

four dot, is what will make a square, a bed to build on, it's all there,

four dot

my ghost likes to travel so far in the unknown

my ghost likes to travel so deep into your space

all the slow clouds pass us by

make the Empire State look high

as you take me in your sea-stained sweetness

it spills, it tingles and it stings

all the pleasure that it brings

'til the door has let the outside inside here

well on the floor there's a long wooden table

on the table there's an open book

on the page there's a detailed drawing

and on the drawing is the name i took

my ghost likes to travel so far in the unknown

my ghost likes to travel so deep into your space

growing up, growing up,

looking for a place to live . . .

my ghost likes to travel

my ghost likes to travel

moving inside of your space

my ghost likes to travel

moving inside . . .

the breathing stops, i don't know when

in transition once again

such a struggle getting through these changes

and it all seems so absurd

to be flying like a bird

when i do not feel I've really landed here

The bold is mine. It's kind of a shame. In this new world of MP3s, the art of the album is gone. This song really needs to be followed by "Sky Blue."

Songs about Reincarnation

Anyone know any songs that are related to reincarnation, afterlife, etc...? Are we allowed to put up youtube videos here? Just found one.

Hi MobiusX

I just saw a post the other day that had "Highwayman" by Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson.

You can go on youtube and listen to it. I look forward to finding other songs with similar themes.

Hi Mobiusx,

I merged your thread with one in the community section. It too was about songs and past lives (& the after-life). I am looking forward to others and hope you share.

Tina Turner's "I Might Have Been Queen"

I'd love to copy/paste the lyrics for you, but can't find a site that will let me without trying to install all kinds of crap on my computer.

The song 'Parabola' by Tool has obvious references to reincarnation. Here are the lyrics in question:

We barely remember, who or what came before this precious moment.
We are choosing to be here, right now. Hold on, stay inside...

This holy reality, this holy experience. Choosing to be here in...

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in

This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion.
Also 'Inland Sea' by '...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead' alludes to it, too:

Stay calm, stay calm
Relax your limbs gently float to earth

Hear the laughing of the Inland Sea

And know your mind is where you're meant to be

Wake up, wake up

Remind yourself exactly who you were

Is the price you've paid to live this little dream

Worth the pain you've been suffering?

The only way out is to go up

Remembering My Incarnations by a band called Mustard’s Retreat is a very beautiful one, if you like folk-type music. It’s available on iTunes and they have a website. The album is called The Wind and the Cricket.

They do also have a song or poem called Reincarnation but I don’t care for it myself (YMMV), in any case don’t get side-tracked from checking out Remembering My Incarnations.

My former identical twin/best friend loaded my itunes with 128gigabytes of music and on shuffle the first song was "It's all been done" by the Bare Naked Ladies...while I have heard it many times before, why did it come up right as I sat down with a Newton book...the lyrics almost jumped out of the speakers...

"I met you before the fall of Rome,

and get you to let me take you home,

You said goodbye and I said good night...

I knew you before the west was won,

I I heard you say the past was much more fun,

You go your way, I'll go mine,

Bet I'll see you next time,

It's all been done, it's all been done, it's all been done before."

Belly Button Window - Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix - Belly Button Window

Well I'm up here in this womb,

I'm looking all around.

Well I'm looking out my belly button window,

And I see a whole lot of frowns.

And I'm wondering if they don't want me around.

What seems to be the fuss out there?

Just what seems to be the hang?

'Cause you know if ya just don't want me this time around,

yeah I'll be glad to go back to Spirit Land,

And even take a longer rest,

before I'm coming down the chute again.

Man, I sure remember the last time baby,

They were stlll hawkin' about me then.

So if you don't want me now,

Make up your mind, where or when.

If you don't want me now,

Give or take, you only got two hundred days.

'Cause I ain't coming down this way too much more again.

You know they got pills for ills and thrills and even spills,

But I think you're just a little too late.

So I'm coming down into this world, daddy,

Regardless of love and hate.

And I'm gonna sit up in your bed mama,

And just a grin right in your face.

And then I'm gonna eat up all your chocolates,

and say "I hope I'm not too late".

So if there's any questions,

make up your mind.

'Cause you better give or take,

Questions in your mind,

Give it a take,

you only got two hundred days.

Way up into this womb,

looking all around.

Sure's dark in here,

And I'm looking out my belly button window.

And I swear I see nothing but a lot of frowns,

And I'm wondering if they want me around.

Great find, there, Chris! I don't think there's any question he was talking about reincarnation in that song. BTW, when I first saw this, I immediately began to wonder if Jimi hasn't come back playing the piano.

I was also wondering today if Jimi has come back, and if he has, whether he has brought some of his musical talent back with him, you never know!

I found this one as well by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young:

When I was about 10 or 11, somebody put me in a sailboat and I already knew how to sail it. I started thinking, I must have done this before. Then somebody ran the idea of reincarnation by me, and it went "boing!" It seems to me that if there's a law of conservation of energy, then life energy doesn't go away either, it gets recycled. They wipe the tape of the identity print, but use the tape again. And there are probably ghost prints, which give the deja vu effect ..... print-through ~ David Crosby

One Two Three Four

If I had ever been here before

I would probably know just what to do

Don't you?

If I had ever been here before on another time around the wheel

I would probably know just how to deal

With all of you

And I feel

Like I've been here before

Feel

Like I've been here before

And you know it makes me wonder

What's going on under the ground, hmmm

Do you know? Don't you wonder?

What's going on down under you

We have all been here before, we have all been here before

We have all been here before, we have all been here before

We have all been here before, we have all been here before

I came across a this song some time ago. It's called In Another Life, by Vienna Teng. I thought it was pretty unusual for someone to sing a song of this nature

Thanks for the link BlackberrySpice

I just want to expand on my earlier post with the David Crosby quote and song. Reading through the cd booklet that comes with his Voyage cd box set, I came across this passage, written by David Crosby himself while referring to the song called 'Shadow Captain'. He certainly appears to remember a past life at sea ... maybe an old sea captain! ;)

I'll be going to sleep, and the busy mind - the verbal, crystallization level mind that's talking to you, will be starting to nod off. And the intuitive, imaginative levels of the mind, the part that makes the longer leaps and wider syntheses, gets a shot at the steering wheel for a second, before you actually go unconscious. And in that little window, something will leap up, and I will wind up grabbing for the lamp and frantically writing pages of lyrics. And it's happened again and again and again.
The first time I remember it happening was (the song) "Shadow Captain". Several years ago, I was about two hundred miles offshore on my boat, and it was three in the morning, and I woke up and wrote that entire set of lyrics, word for word, and then went back to sleep. I had never thought any image in that song or anything about that entire concept ever before... ever! And when I got down to the bottom: "Shadow captain of a charcoal ship...." (lyric) I went "Oooh, Croz, you bad, you BAD!!!" Like I know I love this, and I know I never thought it before. So I know it isn't this busy mind, the tab-A, slot-B kind of mind.~ David Crosby

Galileo (by Indigo Girls)

Galileo's head was on the block

The crime was lookin' up the truth

And as the bombshells of my daily fears explode

I try to trace them to my youth

How long 'til my soul gets it right

Can any human being ever reach that kind of light

I call on the resting soul of Galileo king of night vision

King of insight

And then you had to bring up reincarnation

Over a couple of beers the other night

And now I'm serving time for mistakes

Made by another in another life time

How long 'til my soul gets it right

Can any human being ever reach that kind of light

I call on the resting soul of galileo king of night vision

King of insight

I'm not making a joke

You know me I take everything so seriously

If we wait for the time till all souls get it right

Then at least I know there'll be no nuclear annihilation in my life time

I'm still not right

And then I think about my fear of motion

Which I never could explain

Some other fool across the ocean years ago

Must have crashed his little airplane

How long 'til my soul gets it right

Can any human being ever reach that kind of light

I call on the resting soul of galileo king of night vision

King of insight

I offer thanks to those before me

That's all I've got to say

'Cause maybe you squandered big bucks in your lifetime

Now I have to pay

How long till my soul gets it right

Can any human being ever reach that kind of light

I call on the resting soul of galileo king of night vision

King of insight

But then again it feels like some sort of inspiration

To let the next life off the hook

Or she'll say look what I had to overcome from my last life

I think I'll write a Book

How long 'til my soul gets it right

Can any human being ever reach that kind of light

I call on the resting soul of galileo

King of night vision king of insight

How long 'til my soul gets it right

Can any human being ever reach the highest light

Except for Galileo, God rest his soul

King of the night vision, king of insight

How long

How long

Wow, helenslegacies ... thanks for posting that. I love the Indigo Girls and I used to have that tape, but I never realized they were talking about reincarnation in that song until now!

There's this song by George Harrison "Art of dying"

There'll come a time when all of us must leave here

Then nothing Sister Mary can do

Will keep me here with you

As nothing in this life that I've been trying

Could equal or surpass the art of dying

Do you believe me?

[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/g/george+harrison/art+of+dying_20059012.html ]

There'll come a time when all your hopes are fading

When things that seemed so very plain

Become an awful pain

Searching for the truth among the lying

And answered when you've learned the art of dying

But you're still with me

But if you want it

Then you must find it

But when you have it

There'll be no need for it

There'll come a time when most of us return here

Brought back by our desire to be

A perfect entity

Living through a million years of crying

Until you've realized the art of dying

Do you believe me?

There's also "The Chronicles of life and death" by Good Charlotte. The song itself it's more about life than death but i think the video is interesting. I always thought that the robot in it represents the soul, when the old guy dies, it leaves him and goes to the baby.

Well I know its hard for you to know the reason why

And I know you'll understand more when it's time to die

Don't believe the life you have will be the only one

You have to let your body sleep to let your soul live on

Love has given life to you and now it's your concern

Unseen eyes of inner life will make your soul return

Still I look but not to touch The seeds of life are sown Curtain of the future falls The secret stays unknown

Black Sabbath's "A National Acrobat"

This is a song about remembering past lives, and facing yourself.

Storm the Sorrow Lyrics:

Along the way I find myself to be confined within me

No place for any other's mind to interfere

To grasp the meaning of it all, to overcome my limits

And dance away from any void and empty tones

Just tell me why

Just tell me how I can survive this time

Believe yourself and look away from all that's right within you

Leave all your worries at the door and drift away

I've tried to peer into the core but could not storm the sorrow

My hollow heart has bled me dry, left me to stray

Another time

Without a trace

Condemn me now

Send me to hell for I'm already failing

Intertwine the lines that swim beneath the dark

Realize the pain we live in

Demonize the need we reel in

No, in my memories I'll dig deep enough to know

Centuries of dreams unending

Another me that yielded tears when someone had betrayed

No time should ever go to waste, it's not that complicated

You're free to live your life at ease, no more restraints

No need for shadows on your way that try to steal your laughter

Your light will drive them all away, be confident

Will I refrain? Can I repent? Will you be there?

Erase the page for I'm alone and ailing

Intertwine the lines

That swim beneath the dark

Realize the pain we live in

Demonize the need we reel in, no

In my memories I'll dig deep enough to know

Centuries of dreams unending

Another me that yielded tears when someone had betrayed

So - This is my life

And it can't break me down

Go - I will decide

Who can come in

And heal my disease

Burn it - In flames

Kill it - And maim

Why can't you see that you need to be freed

Intertwine the lines beneath the dark

Every bit of pain we're feeling

Every other solemn life

No, in the memories you will find somehow

There used to be a dream unending

No more need to be alone

Intertwine the lines

That swim beneath the dark

Realize the pain we live in

Demonize the need we reel in, no

In my memories I'll dig deep enough to know

Centuries of dreams unending

Another me that yielded tears when someone had betrayed

Someone had betrayed

Epica Sensorium

Epica Sensorium

Lyrics:

Chance doesn?t exist

But the path of life is not totally so predestined

And time and chronology show us how all should be

In the ways of existence

To find out why we are here

Being consciousness is a torment

The more we learn is the less we get

Every answer contains a new quest

A quest to non existence, a journey with no end

No one surveys the whole, focus on things so small

But life?s objective is to make it meaningful

Only searching for this

That which doesn?t exist

Although our ability to relativize remains unclear

I?m not afraid to die

I?m afraid to be alive without being aware of it

I?m so afraid to, I couldn?t stand to

Waste all my energy on things

That do not matter anymore

Our future has already been written by us alone

But we don?t grasp the meaning

Of our programmed course of life

Our future has already been wasted by us alone

And we just let it happen and do not worry at all

We only fear what comes

And smell death every day

Search for the answers that lie beyond

Epica The Phantom Agony

The Phanto Agony Lyrics:

[i. Impasse of Thoughts]

I can?t see you, I can?t hear you

Do you still exist?

I can?t feel you, I can?t touch you,

Do you exist?

The Phantom Agony

I can?t taste you, I can?t think of you,

Do we exist at all?

[iI. Between hope and despair]

The future doesn?t pass

And the past won?t overtake the present

All that remains is an obsolete illusion

We are afraid of all the things that could not be

A phantom agony

Do we dream at night

Or do we share the same old fantasy?

I am a silhouette of the persen wandering in my dreams

Tears of unprecedented beauty

Reveal the truth of existence

We?re all sadists

The age-old development of consciousness

Drives us away from the essence of life

We meditate too much,

so that our instincts will fade away

They fade away

What?s the point of life

And what?s the meaning if we all die in the end?

Does it make sense to learn or do we forget everything?

Tears of unprecedented beauty

Reveal the truth of existence

We?re all pessimists

Teach me how to see and free the disbelief in me

What we get is what we see, the Phantom Agony

[iII. Nevermore]

The lucidity of my mind has been revealde in new dreams

I am able to travel where my heart goes

In search of self-realisation

This is the way to escape from our agitation

And develop ourselves

Use your illusion and enter my dream...

Epica Unleashed

Epica Unleashed Lyrics:

(Declining, all colour fading) (Defining, time coming for me) (Rescinding, my inspiration) (Receding consciousness) (Aaahh)

Back in the day I can recall that My thoughts were unclouded and sage There was no black Staining the walls of my memories

Now there's a haze pushing me sideways And leaving me nothing to gain Taking me back Locking me cold in disparity

Where was I meant to be? I feel I'm lost in a dream Long for the day I can be myself

When I'm freeWhen my sun has set Release my soul forever I'll have no regret To be free I'll exist again No more lost endeavours Nothing to contend When I'm free

Color declines, all that defines meIs falling away far behindNothing to keep me with the timeThe here and now

Where am I meant to beI feel I'm lost in a dreamYearning again only to be myselfWhen I'm freeWhen my sun has setRelease my soul foreverI'll have no regretTo be freeI'll exist again No more lost endeavoursNothing to contend When I'm free

(Cure me, free me, help me, see me)(No more worry, no more losing)(Save me, near me, help me, hear me)(No more heartache, no misery)(Cure me, free me, help me, see me)(No more worry, no agony)(Save me, near me, help me, hear me)(We despair) No more heartache, no despairing)(Cure me, free me, help me, see me)((No repair) No more worry, no repairing)

Time is just a concept And always the first thing to fadeAgony and weakness Nothing we can ever evadeYears are cruel they break us Bringing on decay and despairAwareness and perception Something we can never repair

(Freedom for me) (Is all I'm really wanting, needing)(Give me power to break out)(I can't hold on for any longer)(My time has come to end it all)

No one to blame Fate's only random It's nothing we'll ever explain So it remains

Where was I meant to be I feel I'm lost in a dreamLong for the day I can be myself free When will I be unleashedIt's not the way it should be Yearning again only to be myself

Free when my sun has set Release my soul forever I'll have no regret To be free I'll exist again No more lost endeavours Nothing to contend When I'm free

Reincarnation in Popular Culture

Perhaps others in this forum have taken notice of reincarnation, past life regression and near death experience as subject matter for popular songs and films. I'll list and discuss a few, but maybe many of you know more examples.

Stevie Wonder had a near death experience in 1973. As a result, he wrote "Higher Ground", which includes these lyrics:

"I'm so darn glad He let me try it again, 'cause my last time on Earth I lived a whole world of sin..."

Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, also had a near death experience in 1967. With his brothers, he co-wrote the song "World" with these lyrics:

"If I remember all of the things I have done,

I'd remember all of the times I've gone wrong.

Why do they keep me here?"

Felix Cavaliere, lead singer of the Rascals, underwent past life regression and wrote "Nubia" about an earlier incarnation:

"Oh Nubia Nubia Nubia, the word is love to me

Your beauty and the gentle magic of your soul live here in my memory"

Jimmy Webb wrote a song called "Highwayman". Interesting lyrics that suggest past lives:

"I was a highwayman. Along the coach roads I did ride

With sword and pistol by my side

Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade

Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade

The ******** hung me in the spring of twenty-five

But I am still alive.

I was a sailor. I was born upon the tide

And with the sea I did abide.

I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico

I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow

And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed

But I am living still.

I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide

Where steel and water did collide

A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado

I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below

They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound

But I am still around..I'll always be around..and around and around and

around and around

I'll fly a starship across the Universe divide

And when I reach the other side

I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can

Perhaps I may become a highwayman again

Or I may simply be a single drop of rain

But I will remain

And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again.."

In popular films, many people interpret "Groundhog Day" as a movie about reincarnation. It involves a man who lives the same day over and over again. For him, he fails to progress until he gets that day right.

In "Forrest Gump", a simple man experiences life as a search for meaning between destiny and free will. The beginning and end of the film shows us the symbolism of this theme as we follow the course of a single feather.

I'm sure there are other examples to be found in popular culture. I thought I would share a few I've noticed. Anyone else?

Deborah, as you may know, Paul Simon wrote a song called, "Fakin' It", which he and Art Garfunkel recorded in 1967. In the middle of the recording, we hear a snippet of a fictional woman's voice, saying, "Good morning, Mr. Leitch. Have you had a busy day?"

As pop lure would have it, the "Mr. Leitch" referred to is Donovan Leitch, a popular singer in the 60's, who believed he was a tailor in a previous life.

The lyrics associated with this are:

Prior to this lifetime

I surely was a tailor.

("Good morning, Mr. Leitch.

Have you had a busy day?")

I own the tailor's face and hands.

I am the tailor's face and hands...

I've never read anything definitive about Donovan's past life exploration, but it's another interesting nugget that suggests that Paul Simon has a fascination with past life experiences.
