Recurring dream of a witch - Curious About My past Life! What was I?

Hello everyone,

For many years from my early 20's into my early 30's I would have the same dream, nothing ever changed in the dream it was always the same. It was always a very dark night and I was always enclosed inside on a yard that was surrounded by a tall wrought-iron gate with arrowhead shaped spikes at the end. I would always be outside of what looked to me like and old castle. It was made of stone. I would open these huge double doors and walk inside. It was dark, but as I went in there were candles placed around. But not to make it well lit, only just enough to see a huge black cauldron sat over a fire in the center of this room. I grew scared and ducked behind a wall or a type of partition and peeked around, and a witch came waking into the room. She was in full black clothes, but I could never see her face. She went to the cauldron and sprinkled this and that with her finger tips into the black pot. She noticed me, but before I could see her face I turned back towards the door that I came in. At this point everything moved in slow motion. My mind moved fast, but my body moved slow. I was running til I got to the gate. It was chained. It started to rain. I grabbed the gate and yelled in slow motion somebody please help me! And I always wake up there.
I stopped having the dream after I was in a car accident and got a concussion... Why couldn't I ever see the woman's face? Was it me ? Was I a witch?

Hi Michelle,

Welcome to the board! This sounds like dream material (IMO), but since dream material can incorporate past life elements, it may also relate to PLs. However, overall, whether it incorporates some PL elements or not, what you have outlined might be better dealt with in the context of dream analysis (with a healthy dash of Jung). Without getting too personal, it appears to me that you have a part of yourself that you don't want to deal with (and have wrapped in a fearful dream image), but can't get away from. However, to the extent I understand the process, you will have to deal with what "the witch" represents in order to progress. In doing this, you may discover that it isn't nearly as scary and horrible as you thought it was. Some actually find that a figure like this--whether related to a PL or not--morphs into something tolerable, harmless or maybe even positive.

Well, I'm well past my non-existent credentials at this point. So, take everything I've said with many pounds of salt. ;)

PS--I really like your avatar! Is that a bay in the background?

Hi Michelle,

Love the beach scene too! As you can tell from my avatar, I'm big on the ocean/shore/sky.

Hello SeaAndSky,

Thank you for replying to what I understand know was just a dream..I really appreciate what you said..It makes alot of sense..
Also that picture in the background is of A beach in Destin, Florida.. My brother who is in the Airforce lives there and I went to visit him a few months before the Covid19 pandemic and I took that pic! I have many more from that trip! I love the Sea! Yes, I can tell that you are a lover of the ocean..
Thank you again,

P:S Love the name SeaAndSky

Hi Michelle,

Yup, I thought that looked like my home state! Best for the future, and if that witch turns out to be something you can talk about, please add a comment. I'm almost as curious about dreams as about PLs.

PS--It is an intriguing dream whatever its origin and meaning!

Hi SeaAndSky,

I often wondered for many years if the witch was my mother, that could be why I never saw her face.. My mom told me not so long ago that I use to draw pictures of what I would call a witch and she said I would hang them over her bed, now my mom and I were extremely close at that time as I was young like 4 or 5 years of age..But many years later in my teens say around 15 up til my age of 47 now, she was a monster to me after finding out a the age of 15 that I am a Lesbian, she became a living monster in every sense you could imagine! I am wondering if subconsciously I dreamt of what was to come from her or dreamt of how I viewed her! Possibly!? Not sure.. But I appreciate your time and interest..

Hi Michelle,

That's a hard one. I can't say that it isn't your mother, but those kind of answers are too easy in most situations (at least in my own personal experience--once again, I'm no professional). I can only say that, intuitively and in my experience, it seems that "like answers to like" in the subconscious--so that the "monster" we find on the inside often wells up in response to and as a reflection of the one on the outside. Hatred and fear arise in response to, and reflect hatred and fear. Sometimes it is also anticipatory--i.e., we react to something we anticipate will be hateful and/or fearful before it has come to pass. Either way, encountering its twisted image on the inside can cause some terrifying nightmares. However, if I am anywhere in the ballpark at all, it sounds like you broke this pattern or cycle in some way . . . . Do you have any idea how this happened?

Hi SeaAndSky,

Wow, that makes alot of sense! I never thought about it in that way before... I believed that she put a curse on me and had others to curse me. So, maybe all these fears that I felt, played apart in my dream, with the "Witch" sprinkling this & that in the cauldron..Maybe that was my interpretation of the spell I felt she was trying to put on me...I don't know!! I don't know how I broke the pattern. I moved out of my moms home finally and decided that I wouldn't be bothered with those who didn't care to be bothered with me..I also decided that I was gonna live my life and be who I am, and those who didn't except me, didn't have to be apart of my life..So, maybe all these fears that I felt, played apart in my dream and created this "Witch"..I also was in a car accident and recieved a concussion, I have no memory of some things, I believe that could have put an end to the dream, as well as moving out on my own.. But I feel as if I have a better understanding of it now. I definitely appreciate you helping me clear up alot of things that I didn't connect with in the dream..
Thank you,
Michelle

Hi Michelle,

It sounds like you handled the matter by disengaging, and perhaps that is for the best. At the very least, it saved you from a lot more conflict and heartache in the short run and left you free to develop a life on your own. However, it is sad to see such a breach between parent and child. Fighting fire with fire just ends up with a lot more fire, but there are very few who can answer hate with love. I think it is even more difficult to do this when the relationship is not balanced--i.e., between two adults rather than between an adult and a child or young person. Perhaps you would be better able to reconcile now that you would both be approaching each other as independent adults. Plus, you both are more mature in years. She is also aging, and age can soften as well as harden. I do not know what affect it has had on her, but I hope you will not give up. Parents have a longing for their children and a desire to be reconciled, though it often has to fight its way past hard-headedness and pride. Little tokens such as mother's day cards can help. Any small positive gestures kept up over a long period of time can help soften an old heart. If it doesn't succeed, at least you will know that you did what you could from your side. Sometimes that is all we have to console us.

I speak as a grand-father several times over, and am probably overly sentimental. But the world is full of heart-ache and conflict, and it is good when the members of a family can find a way to overcome their differences. It may not be possible, but it is good to try.
