Questions regarding Past Life Regression (merged)

must you be awake to see memories of your past life?

I was just wondering(along with a friend of mine), does a person have to be awake to see past memories? The reason I ask is because my friend has been having these dreams about people she had met(and some certain events) and she knows it couldn't possibly be deja vu. For example, in one dream she had she was sixteen or so and she had these friends who she thought she knew, but when she woke up she knew somehow that she did know them, though she's never seen them before. These dreams don't happen too often, so we were just wondering. It might just be a dream, but I wanted to ask because my friend was getting a little worried.

Hi lacy,

Welcome to the forum. :)

You may enjoy this thread from the FAQ section [thread=3519]How can I learn about my past lives?[/thread]

Be sure to check out some of the other threads there, as well. There's some excellent information you can pass along to your friend.

I was regressed

I was regressed last year and it was a fascinating experience. Before I knocked on the woman's door, I knew exactly what her house looked like... even down to the painting of a tiger as you walk in the door.

I wanted to know why I was so deathly afraid of heights and falling and to possibly overcome that fear.

She told me immediately when she opened the door that I AM living two lives right now and to my surprise, I responded, "Yes! And it's exhausting me!" I was somewhat taken aback but also to my surprise, it seemed commonplace to me. She also told me that I was "in tune" to past lives and asked if I could travel out of my body.

At that moment I was so relieved that someone believed in that. You see, as a young child and as a teenager, I felt as though I had lived in this time AND in another dimension of this time. (does that make sense?) It felt as if I had to choose which "side" I would best accomplish my earthly lessons. In order to help myself and others, I had the most unique opportunity to decide where I would be most helpful.

She said that I couldn't decide and that I was fortunate to be able to live two lives at the same time. She asked why I stopped leaving my body over the last few years and once again, I was amazed at her insight. No one knew this but me. I would look into a mirror and mentally ask myself certain questions about why I was here. I would then be able to leave my body and "travel" to receive answers from many souls.

When she finally started the regression, I saw through the eyes of a young boy who lived in an old fishing village. I was extremely close to my older brother and was mortified to find him gone when I came home from picking something up at the store for my mother.

I then found myself running along a dock to a large fishing boat. It was beginning to leave and I knew my brother was on there. I managed my way on board but had to hide.

To make a long story short, I was found and the men on the boat we not happy. They forced me to watch my brother walk the plank and then it was my turn. I remember looking into that water..... it was black and swirling and SO FAR DOWN. I was terrified but still wanted to be with my brother. I was then pushed because I couldn't move.

The lady asked me if I was with my brother now. I laughed and said, "Yes, but he is my husband now." I felt very remorseful and blamed myself for his death. Then it hit me all at once. I always joke about him leaving me.... and he can't understand why I do that all the time. It's weird because we are very happy but I always have that feeling that everyone is going to just up and leave me.

Weird as this seems, I am even MORE afraid of heights now. I can't even walk on a second floor in a mall if there are people behind me. I am terrified that they are going to push me over the side (however unrealistic that is).

Is there anyone else out there who believes they are living in two dimensions of this life and if so, have you been regressed?

Hello tender.one and a big welcome to the forum.

I personally have not dealt with "two dimensions" in the sense of two separate and parallel entities. However I think you'll find many people who know and believe in reincarnation, and who have past life memories, are living with the dual nature of those lives. I believe as we progress through our lives we retain certain powerful and emotional events...as you did. But we are blest with this knowledge in order to deal with it.

I think you'll find a ton of information here. Read the FAQ, it is great resource.

I am fascinated with your story. What time period was your memory from? What does your spouse think?

Peace, The Tinkerman

Hi tender.one, I just thought of something Ailish said in the thread [thread=8213] Fact or Fantasy[/thread]:

Ailish said:
I believe -- the soul never forgets. Our subconscious is a storehouse of memories, emotions, beliefs, patterns, habits and reactions. Our subconscious mind has memories of every event, thought, intent, word spoken, or action from every lifetime our souls have ever lived. It speaks to us in the language of symbols, feelings, intuition and dreams and is also our connection to inner wisdom, spiritual awareness and the collective unconscious.
. . . although it is good to give/receive forgiveness and healing from others for our past deeds (be it in this life or previous lives), the bottom line is that we’re the only ones that can change our lives. We create the “karma” we experience -- we are the creators of the events and actions in our lives. We are wholly responsible for what we choose to do - at all times NOW - not anyone else. We ultimately make the decisions, even if someone else incited us to act or think in a certain way -- therefore the responsibility falls solely upon us. ;)

Hope to hear more from you.

Hi there and thank you so much for your welcome.

I've never been good with geography, etc. so I would only be taking a guess as to the time period. Everyone I saw in my "look back" wore shirts and pants... I wore brown pants just below my knees and a white long-sleeved shirt. My brother wore the same but long pants. There was only earth tones in any clothing I remember. There were no cars. I did see a few carriages along my quick run to the docks though. The carriages were pulled by horses. Our house was small and wooden with what I would consider long steps leading up to it.

As for the two dimensions, I experience this pretty much nightly. My spouse is fascinated because he says there are nights where I will speak to him telling him about a completely different life I am living and how I travel through light to get to that life. He says when I DO talk it is very detailed but then when he wakes up in the morning, he can barely remember what I've said. He says he will take notes next time but that often times than not, I tell him I can't give him too much information because he isn't ready for it yet. Isn't that strange?

Hi tender.one,

Welcome to the forum. :)

Is there anyone else out there who believes they are living in two dimensions of this life and if so, have you been regressed?

Like Tinkerman, I don't have any experiences regarding living in "two dimensions," but I do have many memories of past lives, several which have been with me since childhood.

I have been regressed professionally, which I found to be an interesting experience, although my preference for accessing past life memories is through meditation. ;)

I will speak to him telling him about a completely different life I am living and how I travel through light to get to that life.

Several people on the forum have experiences with Light. Deborah has spoken about Light in several threads. I think you might enjoy reading this one:

You may be able to narrow down the time period by researching clothing styles. Here is a great thread called [thread=11400]Links to reference for research[/thread] which has been compiled by members.

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Welcome to the forums tender.one, your story is quite interesting. While I'm not convinced we can live more than one life at a time, I'm also finding that few things are impossible. I would guess that you are tapping into memories of one of your past lives that might be influencing this life. Using the reference links Ailish provided may give you some answers. Research can be long and involved, but the results can be fascinating. Good luck.

Welcome, Tender.One!

What an interesting subject matter you have brought up- I defintely believe in simultaneous lifetimes! After all, when a past life comes into our consciousness, it is really in the here and now. I believe this means we can also live future lives right now too!!

I think it's exciting how your brother from your past life is your husband in this life-- I believe souls do often reincarnate together in different lives, which stregthens the bond and helps us to learn what we need to learn. What a gift for both you are your husband!

Would you agree with Dr.Stevenson ?

Hypnotic Regression to Previous Lives
A Short Statement by Ian Stevenson, M.D.

The following remarks have been written in an effort to reply most effectively to the large number of letters and inquiries that I receive from persons who wish to apply to me for hypnotic regression to previous lives, wish me to recommend a hypnotist to them, or wish me to investigate some material that has emerged from such an experience.

Many persons who attach no importance whatever to their dreams--realizing that most of them are merely images of the dreamer's subconscious mind without correspondence to any other reality--nevertheless believe that whatever emerges during hypnosis can invariably be taken at face value. In fact, the state of a person during hypnosis resembles in many ways--although not in all--that of a person dreaming. The subconscious parts of the mind are released from ordinary inhibitions and they may then present in dramatic form a new "personality." If the subject has been instructed by the hypnotist--explicitly or implicitly--to "go back to another place and time" or given some similar guidance, the new "personality" may appear to be one of another period of history. Such evoked "previous personalities" may be extremely plausible both to the person having the experience and to other persons watching him or her. Experiments by Baker1and by Nicholas Spanos and his colleagues2 have shown how easily different suggestions given by a hypnotist can influence the features of the "previous personality" in conformity with suggestions.

In fact, however, nearly all such hypnotically evoked "previous personalities" are entirely imaginary just as are the contents of most dreams. They may include some accurate historical details, but these are usually derived from information the subject has acquired normally through reading, radio and television programs, or other sources. The subject may not remember where he obtained the information included, but sometimes this can be brought out in other sessions with hypnosis designed to search for the sources of the information used in making up the "previous personality." Experiments by E. Zolik3 and by R. Kampman and R. Hirvenoja4 have demonstrated this phenomenon.

A marked emotional experience during the hypnotic regression provides no assurance that memories of a real previous life were recovered. The subjective experience of reliving a previous life may be impressive to the person having the experience, and yet the "previous life" may be a fantasy, like most of our dreams. Also, benefit (even dramatic improvement) in some physical or psychological symptom does not provide evidence that a real previous life has been remembered. Persons with psychosomatic symptoms and psychoneuroses recover following a wide variety of psychotherapeutic measures. There are many general effects of any psychotherapeutic measure. Improvement may be due exclusively to these and have nothing to do with the special technique, whether hypnotic regression, psychoanalysis, or whatever, of the psychotherapist.

It is worth emphasizing that very young children who remember verified previous lives often have phobias, such as of water, even though they remember the event that seems to have generated the phobia, such as a death from drowning. Thus remembering the cause of a phobia or some other symptom does not necessarily remove it.

Persons considering hypnotic regression experiments should ask themselves: What benefit would there be for me in coping with my present difficulties if I did remember something that seemed somehow connected with them from a previous life? Would such a memory, even if it were real, remove the difficulties?

This being a brief statement, it cannot do justice to all the complex aspects of the subject, but I will mention that very rarely something of value may emerge during experiments with hypnotic regression to "previous lives." ......
The procedure of hypnotic regression to "previous lives" is not without some hazards. Instances have occurred in which the "previous personality" has not "gone away" when instructed to do so and the subject in such cases has been left in an altered state of personality for several days or more before restoration of his normal personality.

I am not now engaging in experiments with hypnotic regression to "previous lives." I do not recommend hypnotists to persons who wish to have this experience. I do not approve of any hypnotist who makes promises to clients that suggest they will certainly return to a real previous life under his direction. I do not approve of anyone who charges fees for acting as a hypnotist in such experiments.

I do not undertake verifications of details that may emerge from such experiments except in the extremely rare instances that seem to me to show strong evidence of some paranormal process. ........
Although opposed to commercial exploitation of unwarranted claims for hypnotic regression, I am in favor of serious research with hypnotic regression.

..... The dangers of deception and self-deception are perhaps greater than in experiments with hypnosis, especially when the persons experimenting become convinced that they are being guided by discarnate personalities. ......

I haven't seen or heard of anyone being "taken over" by a past life personality. I'm not sure what Dr. Stevenson is referring to.
I know that he has very strong opinions about past life regression being useless or harmful, but I heartily disagree with him on this issue. We actually had a lively discussion about our different views on this issue over dinner about five years ago.

I have personally benefited from past life regression, as I describe in my first book. I have also worked with hundreds of clients over the past 17 years, and have not seen anyone harmed by a past life regression. There can be some residual feelings after a regression that may last for days or weeks, but these reflect current life issues which have been brought to conscious awareness through the regression. This is not the same as "being taken over" by a past life personality.

In Spontaneous cases too....

This is found in the cases of Spontaneous recalls too.(In appro. 2% out of about the 500 cases I have.)

Dr. Rawat,
Thank you for adding that statistic.

From the children's spontaneous cases I've seen, I would imagine that even a higher percentage of the children have residual feelings that persist after a memory becomes conscious. Even when a memory of a traumatic death is NOT conscious, we may see strong feelings expressed-- as in the cases of phobias relating to past life deaths. Sometimes these phobias persist for years.

That's why I believe that in some cases we can help children release these feelings by acknowledging their past life experiences and allowing them to talk about them and express their feelings.

They are not induced!

Yes Carol,
Some phobias, manias, attchments, apathies, feelings of love/hatred and skills are found in children (recalling a past life spontaneously too) corresponding to a past life. But these are normal in a normal person too!

HI Dr. K.S. Rawat,

I am not clear on your post. What is not induced? Would you please clarify your title in the post above for me?

I agree with Carol, in my twenty years of research and ten years on the forum I also have not heard of anyone harmed by past life work or memories. I would suggest that IF there was someone who was displaying disturbed behavior - the person has a lot more work to do, or perhaps the need for another regressionist is in order. IMO they might just be missing the bigger picture.

Since this is the regression section - I am assuming you are speaking of people who have had regressions.

What I mean..

Hi Deborah,
In context of spontaneous recalls, Carol wrote:we may see strong feelings expressed-- as in the cases of phobias relating to past life deaths
This is indeed true, but, these phobias have not surfaced up due to some process like 'hypnotic regression' (or, by some other technique like 'Kayotsarg' of the Jains).

Hi,

I've never seen or heard of a person being "taken over" by a past personality either.

In my own personal case, however, when I learned of my past life as Charlie Stuart it came as a real shock, and left me in a state of depression that did last for quite a while. I also believe I developed over quite some time a certain "obsession" over this past life, but mainly due to the specific events and circumstances of that lifetime and also because I became obsessed with the desire that others should know of the reality of reincarnation also.

Thank you, Carol, for allowing me this space on this forum where I have been able to "vent" quite a lot of this... ;)

Science is interested only in verifiable/verified incidences.

BUT – reincarnation is about more than just science. It is about the human experience – the journey of the soul.

Most people I have met – are not out to validate their memories and experiences to anyone – but themselves. They do not want to be written about in magazines – or studied by others.

The quest for truth – is a personal reflection – and profound understanding – of who we were and how we came to be the people we are now.

How did what you learnt square with your previously-held notions regarding your past lives? Did the regression confirm what you had already felt/dreamed/flashed-back to?

To answer your original question Michal -- the times I have been regressed definitely confirmed what I already knew to be true -- in a positive and wonderful way. ;)

Good for science. I'm interested in what is meaningful to me. I make no pretense to prove the validity of my experiences, and frankly would have no desire to prove them if I could. I know what I've felt and experienced. No one else ever could. So Ailish I agree with you!

The fact that my PL memories seemed to contradict many of my interests and desires made them more meaningful to me.

Science

Science of course is not a game.
It is also a solemn journey: The quest for truth – is a personal reflection* – and profound understanding – of who we were and how we came to be the people we are now.
*Ultimately.
( I would like to add).

No. But then neither is life. And science is a method--no more, no less--toward understanding; not a God. It is an attempt to pin down or conceptualize reality in a way acceptable to humans. But reality transcends even our perfect understanding, and cannot be imprisoned within any dogma or method of thought. It has a way of slipping through our fingers, like water.

Science, when applied to the subjective, fails. In order to proceed beyond to greater understanding you must abandon all weapons, methods, preconceptions. You must be as a newborn child, and walk naked.

Understanding our mundane life and self-realization are indeed different.

While our lives might seem mundane to others, in review, mine at least has been exciting, vibrant, and very much alive. Sometimes I get the feeling that science is more about individual researchers trying to prove themselves correct while discrediting other researchers. Sort of a Quantum one-upmanship.

I have my professional regression tomorrow, any advice?

I am nervous and excited. It took a lot of saving for me to afford this regression and it's over an hour's trip away. I am afraid I've put too much pressure on myself.

Any advice for relaxing? Are there things I can do tonight or tomorrow beforehand to increase the likelihood of a successful regression?

Thanks!

Good luck for tomorrow, ButterflyPsyche - :)

Make sure to get plenty of sleep tonight. A good breakfast when you get up, and it's very important that you try not to put any pressure on yourself. I know it took a long time to save up for it, but you have to go into the regression with no expectations, otherwise you may find yourself trying to force any memories to surface, and that is unlikely to work.

There are also plenty of good tips in the Regression section of this forum, if you have time to look before your early night - ;)

Good luck, and don't forget to let us know how you get on.

Chris - :)

I think many times the first time is like the first pancake you make on a pan. :D Often it won't succeed the way the following ones will, it's not the most beautiful or perfect, but you have to accept the first one will be like that so that you can get better pancakes after that.

I know it's difficult to think this way if you have saved money and are going to travel a long way, but unfortunately there are no quarantees, and because of the high expectations it can be a disappointment.

Often it also happens that at first you think it went badly, but change your mind a little later, when you've had time to reflect and see it from a perspective. And there's still one option - it can go really well and you can be perfectly happy with your session right away.

Best of luck!

Karoliina

Thanks for all the great advice.

Just thought I'd update.

It was a good experience, but I did not get regressed, which was very disappointing. This particular therapist believes in certain groundwork first. He and I discussed my beliefs, this lifetime's "minefields" and he taught me qi gong breathing, meditation and grounding techniques to practice. He also asked me to complete a writing assignment. He says after reading this and after I've practiced, he'll be able to regress me. He did tell me he's never found anyone he couldn't hypnotize, which inspired a little bit of trust and confidence in the process. Again, I was disappointed, but I am really hopeful that this means that my process will ultimately be successful.

Update to come! :)

Hello ButterflyPsy...

On my first visit the time was spent getting to know the doctor and her methods. She was very detailed in teaching me what hypnosis was and how the process worked. Since I traveled a good distance she scheduled me to return the following day for the actual regression. I overnighted in a hotel near by. As I stated before it was a powerful and enlightening event for me. Apparently I'm an easy subject.: angel. Any way I don't think it is unusual to be instructed on the first visit.
