Dr. Charles Richards focuses on what he calls Soul Journey's , a non-hypnotic method of past life work; the following is from his newsletter and I thought a few of his points would make for a great discussion.

Life Between Lives and Current Life Trauma Revisited
Contrary to the reports of some teachers and researchers regarding life between lives (LBL), not all Souls experience extensive reviews, councils, reunions, preparation, and reflection from one incarnation to the next. Soul Journeys with clients in my office demonstrate times when the spiritual hierarchy makes the choices regarding your next life.
This view challenges the New Age notion that we always choose our parents and the circumstances of rebirth. The case below is one example of how such a transition can unfold.
A client named Lisa in her 30’s came to me specifically for a LBL experience and insight into her current life. As an accomplished artist, she was up against an unexplained creative block.
During a past-life Soul Journey session we discovered she’d died in her sleep as an old man. This was the end of a difficult but non-traumatic life as a Black plantation slave in the Southern United States. It was a harsh life of servitude but he, in her words, “had a kind heart and gentle spirit. I did my job so I wouldn’t be whipped.”
While in the cabin one night with a fire smoldering in the fireplace, she quietly stepped out of the worn, expired body.
Standing there out of the body, not knowing what to expect, he finally walked out of the cabin door and into a bright light. On the other side of this light, he was amazed to see a misty pine forest filled with a variety of beautiful birds. He sat and watched the various birds, in particular a nearby woodpecker hopping about. He had a sense he was just supposed to wait and rest. It was a very peaceful setting.
It was impressed upon Lisa that the life lesson then was to learn how it feels to be indentured in servitude. In this role as a male slave she learned compassion from the enslaved point of view. As a result, in her next life she would have more compassion for people of every race and religion.
Lisa wasn’t given much time in between lives before being reborn. During this transition it was communicated that there are times when we pass from one life to the next without much preparation or activity. The next life's lessons would be best applied the faster you are reborn. That way you don’t lose the momentum.
From the between-life state her spirit guide quietly directed us to a lifetime where compassion for all humans would serve her well.
Without fanfare she was reborn a female who became a well-respected journalist based in Chicago. She traveled throughout the Western U.S. writing about the “Enjuns” (spelling used to convey in character pronunciation for Native Americans heard during Soul Journeys) for people in the Eastern U.S. who often saw them as wild heathens. She wanted her readers to see them in a new, more objective way. It was a lifetime of intellectual accomplishment and independence, full of travel, intrigue, and adventure.
