Latin?

Im not even sure if this is a reincarnation dream, so if it isnt shoot me downright away but I figured I may as well ask what you all think...
Anyways, it was a pretty short dream, but in it I was in this stone castle with a bunch of other people..people I knew...and all of a sudden there was this smoke everywhere and everyone started freaking out and I started speaking in Latin....I dont know Latin. After I woke up I looked up what I had said in my dream..."Omina domine nec nirea passus"he translation was "The omens do not soften. The lady suffers" but the chant in itself doesnt make any sense. It just felt strange...I feel as if the building I was in was a church, an ancient, medieval one. A catholic one, which is weird because ive always had a strong, unjustified dislike and even fear of Catholicism. I just figured Id shoot it out there to see what you all think.

If I had this dream, I would think it was a reincarnation dream. It doesn't seem as if a Catholic priest would be speaking of omens. If you have an "irrational" fear and dislike of the Catholic church, do you think there may a past life reason? Just off the top of my head - could this dream have anything to do with Joan of Arc ?

Im not entirely sure that it had anything to do with priests. Indeed, I had the feeling that the people gathered with me were the exact opposite of catholics, but were meeting there at the church in secret. Apparently someone discovered us, and attempted to "smoke us out" I suppose. I dont know, I definitely could just be spinning stuff off here, but thats just what I gathered. Thank you for the response! :D

That's what I felt from your post. I'm just throwing ideas out here, but maybe a coven? Thus, your fear and dislike of the Catholic Church? I mentioned Joan of Arc, because of the lady suffering. Someone they were torturing? There was a group called the Cathers in France, who suffered a lot of persecution, and actually believed in reincarnation. I'm not sure of the dates, but they were early. Maybe 11th century.

Hmm...Ill definitely have to research that. It sounds very interesting and Id be happy to get any information I could. Thank you so much!

I think I saw a British TV special about them. I stream it on a Roku. I'll see if I can find it again. I hope I didn't misspell the word - "Cathers", or "Cathars".

Im not sure why, but I dont think they were Cathars. I read up on them like you suggested andI think they were a bit too close to Catholicism than the people in my dream were. I feel as if the people I was with were alchemists, which Im not even sure if thats historucally correct. Just figured Id throw that out there.

It's plausible, bluedixie. There must have been people practicing the "arcane" sciences. It's just harder to trace. Could you see what you were wearing? Was the smoke from an attempt to "smoke" you out? Could it have been partially from censors? Sometimes our modern subconscious overlays past life memories in dreams with things from other parts of our lives. It makes things more confusing.

Just throwing this out there, possibly pagans attempting to desecrate a church, or else the church had been built on one of their holy sites and they were determined to carry out their ancient rituals, which the church powers would understandably take umbrage with? You mentioned "the Lady" and the first place my mind went was "Maiden, Mother, Crone".

Im not too positive on location, which is frustrating. Pagans sounds close, but theres no way to be positive. Im still not even sure it was a reincarnation dream, and the only reason I believe it might is because what I believed to be gibberish turned out to be real words in an ancient language.

"The lady suffers..." would seem to refer to the Madonna (My Lady) who is commonly depicted as suffering (through the loss of Her son).

A different meaning in a different language?

Hi bluedixie...

because I speak German , I looked up a translation from Latin to German and then translated it again in English and this is what I got instead of "soft"...

erweichen: be made weaker

aufweichen: weaken or to be weakened

Both of these words could also be used as soft or to soften, but the above meaning is also possilbe!

Hmmmm...

No bluedixie,

I don't think so...but every language gives a different perspective on a word, which might help the meaning become clearer. And I also don't think it is possible to "prove" that anyone has had a past life 100%. I've come pretty close,as others here, but there is no proof. For myself, it isn't necessary.

Very interesting!

I think the lady is the "church" itself. That's just how I take it, esp if you are now fearful of Catholicism. You may want to read up on papal prophecy and prophecy of the saints. You may find clues there. Best of luck.

That was very insightful, Arynleigh. The "lady" could be the church. There must have been many times throughout "her" long history that people believed that it was going off-course. When bluedixie logs back in, maybe she will have thoughts on the subject.

If I had had that dream, I would say it was absolutely past life - but go with your gut feeling. The setting, time, the fact you 'knew' the people - spoke a different language - all very strong clues. The fact you could remember the Latin after waking is amazing.

Sounds to me like the church was being sacked - quite common in those days. But, were the people acting like it was a ceremony, or were they frightened?

I had a flashback once where I understood written Latin, so I can relate. I have since dated that lifetime to around approx. 1199-1250 (judging by the type of writing I saw being used & church architecture). I was under the impression that 'Domine' meant 'Lord' after reading here:

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/domine

Wikitionary you can type in different words, maybe compare the results with what you remember saying. Where did you do your translation? I am interested, in case I remember more. :)

I do not entirely agree with your source of translation, as there are words, that were definitely altered. For example omnia means all, the omen is a Latin word and it would have been the same in English too. Domine is the vocativus of the lord (dominus in nominativus), and the word for the lady - it most probably would have been domina as it is the female version of dominus - is entirely missing from the sentence.

The scene could have been related to a hunt for the enemies of the Church, but the 11th century seems to be a bit too early to me. The extermination of the Cathars was an issue in the 13th century, this would be my first guess if I had to date the scene. There were plenty of other groups considered heretic at that time, the Cathars are only the most well-known of all.

Joan of Arc is my personal favourite. Though she did not speak Latin. Her trial was much more of political than religious nature. Heresy was only a good reason for the Duke of Bedford and his companions to get rid of her.

I am curious, whether you have further or more exact details. It would help us define the location or the date.

I have two thoughts. Originally you said this:

1) Even if you were in the chapel of a castle complex, if you said "the Lady", everyone there would know you were speaking of the lord of the castle's wife ( or possibly his mother.)

2) In alchemy, the mixing of the feminine and masculine principles are very important. Look into the alchemical marriage. The failing lady might be a failed experiment.

That's a very insightful response, Blueheart. I think bluedixie mentioned something about being an alchemist further back in the post.

Your Latin translation is straight up wrong, that's one of the problems of using automatic translators. I'll try to explain this a bit better, I won't translate the phrase but instead I'll give you the possible meanings of each word.

Omina -- This does mean "omens", although gramatically, it can be the subject ("The omens said so"), a vocative ("O omens!") or an object ("I see omens.")

Domine -- It does NOT mean "lady". Domine means "O lord".

Nec -- It usually means something along the lines of "nor", "neither", etc.

Nirea -- Not a word, as far as I know.

Passus -- This one can be a lot of different words. To get the exact meaning in a normal Latin text, you would usually look at the context to see what made sense, and what type of word was required.

The thing is, that Latin makes no sense. It sounds like gibberish to me. I can look into it a bit more and get opinions from people who work with Latin for a living but I'm almost positive that the words don't fit together at all. It's not actually possible to translate it accurately either, because in English it would probably sound like the words could conceivably fit (English makes a less visible distinction between things like word gender, word functions in the phrase, verb number, etc).

It sounds to me like it really was just a dream into which you incorporated random latin-sounding words you picked up in your waking life (without noticing), or that these words, at least these exact words, weren't part of the original memory.

I hope this helps.

Honestly, when I originally wrote it, I was on the internet just sounding out the words and trying to see how it could be spelled alternatively, that's most likely why the translation's wrong. Anyways, like I said, I can't remember much. I just remember being there and being attacked.
