Door with a Red X

Della1349

New Member
Hi there am new to the forums and never used to really believe in past life memories but I seem really obsessed with the middle ages. Especially the 14th century.

I sometimes dream of a door with a red X on it and I will always be the one on the inside of the door. The door is always boarded up. I don't understand what this means and I hate seeing the door. I hate it with a passion. I have tried asking different people but they insisted that I must of read it in a book but I haven't.

I know the area is in Norwich but it's different from how it is now. There is a wall going all the way round it and the clothes are really cool. Well I think they are.

I have tried to think of all explanations but now I have none. I am now wondering if this is connected to my past life. I have tried to remember things and some things are familiar. I know Norwich like the back of my hand. Even in the streets I haven't been in. I look at the old medieval wall and I can almost see it how it was when it was built. As you will have noticed from my username I keep getting the year 1349 in my head.

I have entered Norwich 1349 in the internet but all that keeps coming up is the Black Death comes to Norwich. I try to find more information but that's all that comes up.

There are certain things I hate which I have no explanation for. I defiantly hate the door with the red X. I am also scared of isolation. If someone locks me in a place on my own I totally freak out. I also can't stand a man with a beak costume. I saw one in Dragon Hall. He was just dressed up for an occasion but I totally panicked and ran away from him.

I just don't understand why I am like this. I am sorry if I have said anything wrong. I just need some explanation.

Is this a past life memory or am I going mad.

Thanks for your help.

wellllllcome Della, you're definitely not mad, so take a deep breath and relax. This is how a past life bubbles up.

I'm sure someone here will have some ideas about a red X.

Can you describe the clothing more? Have you seen photos online that remind you of them? We'd love to see them if you have.

Are you feeling isolated? Often these things come up because they're associated with an area where we need healing or insight in our present life.

Feel free to let us know if you have any other memories. Talking about it in a safe place can really help. If you run a search and find a thread that interests you, don't hesitate to comment. We love it when you bring old topics up again.

Even things you enjoy can be connected.

In the Middleages they used to imprison plague-infected folks with their whole families in their own houses. It was a kind of quarantine. The doors would be painted with a cross to warn off other people. The Plague doctors used to wear birdlike masks to protect themselves against infection with bundles of herbs in the "nose" part.

If you're being honest about everything here, and have little to no knowledge of the plague (Black Death) then you're going to be very surprised at some of this information~ (not that I have any reason to assume you're lying, there's just a lot of information here that spookily adds up). During the Black Death it was extremely common to mark the doors of the families homes that housed victims of the disease with a large painted cross in either red or black paint, (they even sometimes locked or boarded up the house for up to 40 days), to warn people not to enter. This was done in order to try and contain the disease and prevent it from spreading. The 'beak mask' you're referring to, I'm assuming looks something like this: View attachment 734 In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, some doctors wore a beak-like mask which was filled with aromatic items. The masks were designed to protect them from putrid air, which (according to the miasmatic theory of disease) was seen as the cause of infection. The Plague Doctor was a special medical physician who treated those who had the plague. They were specifically hired by towns that had many plague victims in times of plague epidemics. So the fact that you have a date in which the black plague hit the area you're drawn to is very interesting indeed :) Plague Doctor 6.jpg

I thought black death too, or some sort of epidemic at least. What's interesting though is that you remember the sign from the outside... perhaps you knew a victim?

ColourofDarkness, interesting about the mask! Though Della1349's memories are from 1349, whereas the mask was from the 18th century... hm. Perhaps they're from two different sources, but the incidents are similar.

Either way, you're not mad. Do you feel any ties to Norwich otherwise?

EDIT: Apparently the mask existed in the 1300s as well. The link contains a picture of such a mask - proceed with caution if it's an unpleasant trigger for you! There's others on google images too, but I'd be careful there because google images shows a lot at once.

Looked at he link and almost dropped my iPad. I have always hated that. They are creepy. Also I am not lying. I have drawn the door from my dreams in a drop and draw place. My hands were shaking but I managed to draw it. There was also writing on the door but I couldn't make out what it said. I suppose if I had actually been outside it would of been different but I am always the one stuck inside the stupid building. I always loved the Middle Ages but not this. It's nasty and I hate it. I was born in Norwich but I haven't been anywhere. Even the streets I had never been seem Familiar. I also remember a herb shop near castle meadow which is weird cause I have asked my mum and there was never a herb shop there.

Have I looked at old pictures of Norwich? No. I can't find no medieval pictures of it. Every history book I have read in Norwich is filled with modern Norwich.

Also I have never been isolated. If anyone should be scared of something like that it should be my brother as he had to be isolated as a baby. I have no reason to be scared of isolation I just am for no reason.

I wish I could say more but it not easy when all I remember is looking out of a window.

Anyways many thanks for the posts. Sorry if I am not much help. Will continue to try and remember but when I try to remember what happened after I saw the red x my mind goes all blank.

But, mostly likely the plague.

sorry about that the rambling.

Hello Della, I might be able to help.

Many people dream of a doorway containing old or subconscious memories. It might be a symbol containing traumatic things you're afraid to remember.

Plague doctors wore beak-shaped masks full of fragrant flowers to keep away the stench of death.

A very special person was born in Norwich in your time. "Julian"

remains one of the most celebrated Christian mystics. I hope you were close to her!

(Careful, don't get automatically carried away thinking you were her! Maybe you were, maybe you're attached to her memories. It could be anything.)

If you believe in the power of prayer or psychic communication across time and space, try praying to her and asking for more information.

Best luck!

Definitely makes me think of the plague, very interesting. Such an experience must have been traumatic, and the freaky beak mask looks like something straight out of a nightmare. I hope you find some peace.

It certainly seems scary. The beaked man is something I have always hated since I first saw it. My friend tried to send me some pictures of doors with red x's and I thought I was going to be sick. Probably pure panic. She didn't mean to she just wondered why I was like this. Thanks for everyone's replies as I really thought I was losing my mind x

Hi Della,

Welcome to the forum.

It all adds up to a past life as far as I can see. A fear of being locked in would definitely be related to a past life trauma such as this. Your strong reaction to an image of a door painted with a red cross would also be very consistent with this. It's possible you can't read the writing on the door because you couldn't read back then. Hardly anyone could except the clergy or the very wealthy, but they would all know what an X meant.

It might seem cruel to lock people into their houses, but if you think about it, there wasn't a lot they could do. There was no cure and the plague was highly infectious. Put that with a limited understanding of germs and how contagion spread and there weren't many other options available.

They knew that bad smells were somehow related to illness and disease, but didn't really know why, which is why doctors would wear 'herbs' near their noses in the belief that it would protect them by somehow counteracting the 'bad air' associated with evil smells. No doubt the sight of one of these guys would have been very terrifying back then. It would have been a bit like seeing guys in the kind of space suits they wear now to deal with contamination, coming to your house.

Thousand of people would be wiped out within weeks once the plague came, so in a way, quarantining people was life saving if you were quick enough about it. Sadly a healthy person would also be locked in with the sick and dying, whether they were a relative or just a servant, which would be pretty horrifying I imagine.

Now that you know what this is all about, you can start the process of healing this past trauma, so hopefully you won't be so scared by it in the future. Often once people work out what is causing their fears and realise they aren't going mad or anything, it starts to get better right away.

Do you have any sense of whether you were a male, female, young, old, family member, servant....? Just go with your intuition if you're not sure. You can trust it. You say you liked the clothes? This could indicate you were a female. Perhaps you were involved in the garment trade in some way? Have a think about it and see what comes up.

Sometimes finding out more about exactly what happened and more about the rest of that life helps to take some of the mystery and the fear out of it for some reason. Perhaps there are some 'good' memories that can balance out this horrible one?

Know I was a female. I know it sounds weird cause I am female but honest I was female. I had straw coloured hair which was mostly covered in white material. Wore basic clothes. I also had a pale face. Don't know if it was was constant but when I thought of what I might of looked like I see myself as very pale.

I love the smell of lavender. I don't know if that has anything to do with this but it relaxes me. I also love dark colours. Again probably has nothing to do with the Middle Ages.

I even creep my mum out. Was walking around castle meadow and suddenly said "there used to be a herb shop here" and mum told me there has never been a herb shop here but I remember there was. This is a more happier memory as I love the smell of herbs.

I could go on but you would probably think I am a weirdo. So I will stop there.

Thanks again

Nonsense Della. Of course we don't think you're a 'weirdo'! Not at all. If you are, you are amongst friends anyway! LOL

It seems to me that you have a natural gift for this. Do you think this feeling about herbs and lavender might be connected with this life you described above? It could be.

...I saw one in Dragon Hall. He was just dressed up for an occasion but I totally panicked and ran away from him...
I noticed this. You still live in Norwich? I hadn't picked that up before. Have you always lived there? Or recently moved? This place would certainly give you triggers, along with other old places around there. It wouldn't surprise me at all if you've been getting 'flashbacks' from walking around the old castle and the like.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Hall,_Norwich

Dragon Hall is a Grade 1 listed medieval merchant's trading hall located in King Street, Norwich, Norfolk close to the River Wensum. The Great Hall was built between 1427 and 1430, but some parts of the site, such as the undercroft, are older. Archaeological research has shown evidence of 1,000 years of human habitation on the site. Dragon Hall was built by a merchant called Robert Toppes as the hub of his international trading empire. The building stands close to the River Wensum on King Street, the main road through the city in the fifteenth century, with excellent road and river transport links...
There's nothing weird about being the same gender as before or a different gender. People swap back and forth, stay the same ... it just depends, but it's perfectly normal.

...I had straw coloured hair which was mostly covered in white material. Wore basic clothes. I also had a pale face. Don't know if it was was constant but when I thought of what I might of looked like I see myself as very pale.
Women always wore bonnets on their heads in those days. This was partly because nobody much had indoor plumbing and everyone had long hair, so they'd only wash it about once a week (if that). The rest of the time the bonnet kept it clean and tidy. It also helped keep the head warm in the days before central heating!

If you say you wore simple clothes, this could indicate you were a servant, either that or your family was not wealthy.

Please feel free to tell us more about your story and your experiences and promise not to think you're weird. :)

I can't remember much. It's all hazy. I remember the herb shop. That being a happy memory.

The door with the red x I absolutly hate. It's really brief.

When I see that door it gives me a headache. I wake up with a headache.

What happens after I know I am shut inside is really blurry. It's like I couldn't think straight at the time.

Thanks all anyways.

Maybe you had the plague. Or died from starvation because you were locked inside?

Is it normal to hate a harmless nursery rhyme?

My brother was playing a game called Dead Space and I was typing away on the laptop and I heard the ring around the rosy nursery rhyme.

I froze and when I found I could speak I told him I hate that nursery rhyme with a passion. My brother laughed and said I hate everything. Isolation, red x's, beak men and now a silly nursery rhyme that means nothing.

I told him I don't care I hate it. I tolerate it cause my little niece sings it. I can't stand it. There is something about it. I refuse to play it...

I am weird.

Maybe in the past life you died from the plague, since that rhyme originated from dealing with that bubonic plague...

i was just like you a few days ago!! thinking im going crazy! but finding this forum has give me an understanding and i have discoverd alot about myself, my past life and all sorts of mind boggling questions, the people on here are very nice and will guide you too :jump: good luck

You're not 'weird' Della, you have a little bit of 'post traumatic stress'. It happens quite a bit.

There is quite a bit of evidence that this nursery rhyme dates back to the plague, athough there is some dispute about it.

The 'pocket full of posies' is probably a reference to people keeping a 'posy' of sweet flowers and herbs on them, as we discussed above, people had the idea that this would help against contagion. 'Atishoo .. we all fall down...' is a pretty obvious one. 'Ring a rosies'? Well, that could just be because it rhymes with posies... Nobody really knows for sure.

But children playing this game may have been their way of coping with the stress of the plague? It's no wonder if it gives you the willies.

I don't get this... I can't honestly tell if I maybe have two past lives or if this is the same one ( can't see how it could be the same as I wasn't isolated but here goes).

I do voluntary in a church. A historical church and as I wasn't busy I started to doze. I closed my eyes to see myself praying desperately in an old fashioned little church. (Not in the same one I volunteer in). I became aware I was crying and was praying desperately. When I quickly opened my eyes in shock I realised I couldn't remember what I was praying for. I have never been religious. I was shocked to see it.

I really wish I could remember what I was praying for. But i can't.

That may have been a trigger for bringing up past life memories. You may get more details now that the door has been opened.

Could be the same one or could be another one Della. You might have been praying for your family during the plague, or it might have been something else. Just because you are not particularly religious this life, doesn't mean you never used to be before. People were much more involved in the church and religion in the old days than they tend to be now, so it's not unlikely.

Do you get any kind of feeling about what you were wearing? That can help work out what historical period it was in.

I don't know what I was wearing. I was just crying and praying hysterically like a baby. I was going to lock up the church because I felt ill after I was fully awake but then I realised i felt better 10 minutes later. I just don't understand this.

It's past life recall Della, that's all. It's more common than you might think, except people mostly don't talk about it and if they do, people don't believe them.

Could be you felt ill at the memory? Maybe when you were praying hysterically you felt ill, but then once it passed you felt better?

I don't have much to add but will be following this thread. I hope what you learn helps you in this lifetime.

As for being weird ... I used to think I was weird, now I know the correct term in enlightened :D Welcome wine**

Sometimes people have residual pains or physical issues related to past traumas.

What's happening Della?

Don't have a clue. I keep getting a pain under my armpit for no reason. It comes and goes. Like last time I was when I was watching a horror film.. It's weird. Forgot to add have been to the doctors but he says there's nothing wrong with my armpits. Grrr

What was the horror film about, and what's been going on other times you've had the pain? It might be connected. It might be nothing. Hard to say without a bit more info. Like, do you get it when you are scared or anxious perhaps?

With regards to the horror movies, I think that's sort of up to you.

But you might find interesting, I'm not sure how much you've read on the Black Plague and whether you already know it, but the armpit is a common location for the buboes (hence Bubonic Plague, affecting the lymph nodes) to grow in the infected. It's quite a nasty affair but here is a link:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000596.htm

There are quite a few threads around on the subject of how our past life illnesses, physical traumas, and pains might affect us in our current lives and I know a lot of people around here (including myself) have had some experience with that. Does that identify as a sort of cause to the pain you mention?
