"Did someone call me?"

Looking Backwards

First, a disclaimer: The only voice I have ever heard in my head is my own. I have never been told to do jump off a bridge, eat my neighbor's dog, or anything else. This is about hearing my name being called.

Up until about the end of high school, I used to constantly hear my name being called. It happened less and less as I grew older, and I was wondering if anyone knew what it could be.

Here's a case by case list:

1. I was in the family office when I heard a voice that sounded like my dad say my name. I turned and nobody was there.

2. I heard what sounded like my Mom call me, went downstairs, only to find her preoccupied and certain she hadn't called for me.

3. A few times I heard another girl call me.

4. I was outside and heard what sounded like a friend call my name.

5. One time I heard someone say "ribbit." Not as in they croaked - they actually said that.

Does anybody know what these things could mean? I don't know if I hear ghosts or what, but what especially perplexes me is when it sounds like people I know.

Also, is this any way possibly PL related?

I had that happen to me occasionally when I was a kid. In one case I was in the backyard calling for someone in my family and a voice directly behind me told me where they were. I turned around quick and there was no one behind me. I went to look where they said and that is where I found who I was looking for. So then I had the dilemma of deciding if it was a ghost or spirit or I was imaging things, and if I was imaging things why was I right about the persons location?

I think the voice thing would either have to do with ghosts or if your tired at the time, it could just be your mind slipping into a bit of a dream state. If it is ghosts then the voice that said 'ribbit' sure must have had an odd sense of humor, lol.

Yeah, I don't know if it was a weird memory even, where I somehow had the same name. It's certainly possible, my name's as common as it gets and has been since the 1800s, but I'm not sure.

I also heard somewhere that if you hear your name being called it means someone's thinking of you. Anyone else heard of that?

Could what sounds like "ribbit" have been a name such as Ribault or Ribaut? It was apparently pronounced something like Ree-BOW.

I could get into a book about this sort of phenomena but - there is a short story that is 'past life' related. By the age of 23, I had sorted through many various experiences including a stockpile of experiences in my childhood. I didn't like dealing with it 'above' the surface. I liked for that sort of thing to go on below the surface and leave my 'human mind' out of the mix.

When I was 23 - I met a young 15 year old who was struggling and coping with being raised by a single Mom. His Dad had passed away. When we first met - it was the classic 'soul reunion' meeting and signals and signs were going off left and right above the surface. I knew what it meant but kept my insight to see how he was going to handle it in his own mind.

He said things the first day we met and it was like his spirit had popped it's head out and said things to me - for a formal introduction in a mystical way and then popped inside and hid itself. I knew we were dealing with the 'mind' and the 'soul' and it was two different levels.

A few months into our friendship - I made a comment about the 'coded' things he had said to me the first day we met. He couldn't remember saying it much less explain why. The first thing he said to me was,

"The promised is fulfilled. Your in my sight once again. I found you."

Then he said something about,

"You haven't changed a bit since I saw you last."

I was working in a convenience store as a manager and had thousands of customers a day. I thought he was an old customer at first. I was struggling to find memories of what store or location he had been a customer of mine before. Five minutes into it - my gears changed and I knew I was working with a 'reincarnated soul' from a past life.

I felt that within those first five minutes - he knew things about it that he wasn't revealing. Two months later - he couldn't remember what he had said other than struggling with trying to figure out where he had met me before.

During our conversations in the coming months he told me,

"Why is it that when I am around you - and I turn my back - I hear you talking to me, but when I turn around your not talking. It is like I hear you but can't fully understand what your saying at times. It is strange, but I feel there is a conversation going on at all times whether we are using or mouths or not. What IS that?"

I just laughed. It was going on with me too. I always felt the 'spirit' had tone, language and worked in a vibration level below in our hearts. The echo's it sent out were of a different vibration range but when it hit us - it would get translated when needed for the sake of our human minds. So, if our heads were turned - then there would be a slight pause in that frequency and we would tune into it from time to time. I felt our 'spirits' were old and dear friends and had their own way of talking to another.

Then he told me that sometimes he would hear my voice calling him and I wouldn't be any where around. I told him I had gotten used to it. I heard his voice calling from time to time and thought it was just a way for our spirits to lets us know we were due for a visit with one another.

This is not an isolated case for me but it is a rare case that the other person brought it up in conversation and we spoke directly and identified it as a 'spiritual' voice that was hidden in us all. I told him,

"It likes to be heard sometimes to let us know we are really never alone. Our spirit is always with us."

I admit, now, that I've distinctly heard my name being called by my father, but his tone was reminiscent of the times that he was quite upset with me. So, I never considered it as anything but a fluke of the mind. One one occasion as a child, I remember being awakened abruptly by a loud crash of heavy metal; but the neighborhood was peaceful and no one else heard it. I have wondered if it could have been a flashback of being hit by a car during a previous life.

Once, when I was a teenager and singing into a tape recorder with my sister in the basement late one evening after the rest of our family went to bed, my sister and I both heard my mother call my name in an angry tone of voice. I immediately turned off the music and hurried upstairs to apologize for waking her when I found her in bed, fast asleep. Back in the basement and very confused, sister and I listened the tape and sure enough my mother's voice was recorded there. The next morning we asked mother if she had heard us playing music the evening before, and did she call downstairs to me?--and she said no, she had not.

Without wanting to sound like I'm a crazy person, I also hear words in my head loud and clear, and most of the time just a single word. This always happens when I'm either extremely tired, or just about to fall asleep.

Just last night I was sitting here tired, and my head began to nod, when I was suddenly startled awake by hearing somebody say the word "Semper" very loud in my head. I have no idea if this is a name or a word, it has no significance to me personally as far as I'm aware.

Other times I've heard my name being called loud and clear, sometimes by voices that I recognize, other times not. I'm glad I'm not the only one who experiences this. :o

I read somewhere a long time ago, that when you are in a half asleep/awake state, your ears become extremely sensitive, and that even the sound of something small like a coin hitting the floor, can rattle around in your ears like somebody stood next to you with a shotgun. It's happened to me on a few occassions :)

'Semper' means 'always' in Latin ;) Does that make sense to you?

Somebody did actually tell me that it means 'always' in Latin. But what I meant to say was, I don't know what it means to me personally (if anything at all). Did I intentionally hear the Latin word? or a name? or just some random noise that sounded like that word? I have no idea, but it was very distinct.

Thanks Sunniva :)

Well...I guess that means we're all schizophrenic! :jump: :D :freak:

I've always wanted to be part of my own group!

This group just keeps getting better! :clapping:

I've often heard my name being called and no one was around and am so glad to know I'm not the only who's experienced this.

It's usually my mother's voice, sometimes my husband. Sometimes I don't recognize the voice and sometimes just a whisper. Once it happened when I was hiking alone with my dogs (9 of them...so maybe I am crazy ) I heard someone say my name loudly and clear as a bell. All the way back to the car I was convincing myself it was just a bird making a funny noise...

Once when I folding laundry, I swear I heard a voice say "mommy" behind me. That was a definitely little creepy since I don't have kids.

Reminds of a line from the song "Small Town Eccentrics" by Kath Tait

"On the edge of normality, lies individuality".

It is very true.

Good to hear that I'm not THAT crazy. I've heard my name called many times when either there was no one around or when I'm in a place where nobody should know me. I usually just shrug it off as my mind playing tricks on me, or someone calling out to another Mike (as it is a very popular name in Canada for men my age).

However, I had an experience last year that shook me to the core. I was stopped on a side street at a red light waiting to turn left onto a major road. To make a long story short, this red light is behind a blind turn and the area is notorious for speeding and street racing. I'm amazed nobody has been killed in this intersection although there have been a few serious collisions and many have died on the road itself.

I got the green light and just as I was about to turn, I had an overwhelming loss of strength and a voice told me to not take off so soon. Before I had a chance to shake off such a silly feeling, a large transport truck flew through the red light going about 80km/h! The driver was not paying attention until after he cleared the intersection, so he would not have been able to swerve or stop.

If I had to proceed as I normally do, I would have likely been killed because he would have hit me right on the drivers side door at full speed. After that incident, I never again laughed at anyone who has claimed spirits have guided them. I don't know what it was, but something was definitely looking out for me that day!

When I was much younger I would hear my name being called every now and then, but could never recognize the voice.

Later I was going to visit my parents, and I got off the Interstate for a rest stop, and when I got ready to turn onto the Highway leading to the Interstate, I looked and got ready to turn when I felt a hand on my face and turned my head towards it, and saw a large truck heading towards me, in the lane I would of been in.

This experience may really be PL related, because one night around 3:00 AM, I was concentrating hard on the O2 log when I started smelling a woman's perfume, but no one had been in the office except me, and years later I would find out that it was the perfume that my late Grandmother wore, but why did she visit me years later after her death, perhaps to let me know she was coming back?

I haven't heard my name called, but a few months ago I did try something slightly similar to Chris' experience :)

I was just on the verge of falling asleep when I suddenly heard: "Dat heb ik van houde" which is Dutch and means "I love/like that". It woke me up completely, because I was so surprised to suddenly hear it. Dutch is not my native language, but I am somewhat familiar with it and I think it's a beautiful language, but I'm extremely puzzled as to why this line suddenly popped up in my head.

hydrolad and Mr. Mike, they were amazing escapes you had there, I've heard a lot of similar stories and it certainly seems like many of us have spirits that are looking out for us :)

Sunniva, can you describe how you heard those words in your head? I know it's difficult to put into words, but it is very different to just 'thinking' those words wouldn't you agree? It's almost like you can actually 'hear' the words internally, it's not an external sound is it? And like you, whenever I hear it, it always startles me awake just as I'm about to fall asleep. It happens to me so often, that I'm thinking of starting a journal :)

I have had my name shouted several times, but only by a former fiance. When we were seeing each other we had a telepathy thing going which we laughed at. But at one time I awoke at 3 am to my shouted name in a house all alone. I called the fiance in another city and state because it was her voice and I got the sense something was wrong. Her roommate said she was being taken to the hospital by ambulance with appendicitis. This was the most critical of the shouts.

I broke up with the fiance, but she shouted at me again over 18 years later. I was dozing on a train in Italy and her shouting my name woke me up and I got a full, lifesize vision of her along with a lot of memories, emotions, etc. I haven't been in communication with her to ask what might have happened, but I know she is alive and well, so I think I'll leave it at that.

You people are all nuts. :freak: :D

You can throw my name into the hat of those who have heard their names called by...well...no one. The house I grew up in, we heard all kinds of weird things. One thing that was common was hearing a loud crash coming from the basement that sounded like something fell on the floor. Upon further review, we couldn't figure out what caused the noise. Nothing was out of place. I wasn't the only witness to that happening.

I have heard my name many times, but it hasn't happened to me lately. It seems like what is most common thing now is thinking that my phone is ringing when it's not.

This reminded me of the time I stopped at a friend's place to pick her up. As we were heading out the door her husband called her back to ask her something delaying our departure by a couple of minutes. As we were later driving along the motorway we were stopped by an accident that had only just occured where a car had crossed the median barrier and smashed into five cars travelling in same direction as us. I have often wondered if spirit guides may have played a hand in delaying our departure as there is a very real possibility we could have been caught up in this accident if we had been a few mintues earlier leaving.

I've told this story before, but it was actually an unexpected "voice at the back of my head" that cued me in to investigate a possible past life. I was doing research about what I thought might be someone else's past life, and a somewhat familiar sounding voice came out of left field and said very clearly, "Jody, look up John Paul Jones." Now, I knew this voice was in my head (as in, no one was standing behind me) and I wasn't disturbed by it because it seemed to me to either be a message from my higher self or a spirit guide or something, because I've actually heard from it before (to prompt me of a name I'd forgotten or an appointment I'd otherwise miss). But it clearly wasn't part of my regular thinking process because I was totally absorbed into researching another group of people entirely.

Yes, I have heard people saying my name and other things...only to find nobody near.

The strangest one was sometime back, maybe a year or so ago, when I came home from work. I was checking my mailbox when I heard a child ask me if I could help her. I turned around to respond and there was no one there. Well, I don't know if it was imagination, or if it was a spirit, but I wondered about it for a long time.

Sorry, I hadn't seen your reply till now :) It's exactly as you describe -- an internal voice. It was as clear and loud as if I had said them myself, but it was (without sounding too crazy) in my head :o

I just found in my notes another experience I had forgotten about where the same thing happened, but in French. Again half asleep I heard a woman say "Le BAR rouge" repeatedly and insistingly and then 'Ces't la vie, ma cherie' and ending with 'Tout ne's pas' or something like that. I don't speak French at all, although I know a few phrases, but this experience was sooo weird

I am so happy that I am not the only one here. I have a few experiences to.

When I was in High school:

1. I was waiting for school bus and talking with my dad. After I got on the bus a we were about a mile away. We were picking up kids and all of us talking and laughing. When all of a sudden I heard my dad call my name loud as day. I spun around so fast my neck hurt for a few days. But my dad was no where around. I thought he had followed the bus. I asked him later about it, but he just laughed it off. So I left it alone.

2. I was alone in the house and we lived in the country. No one could come or go with out you being able to see them for about ¾ mile down the road. I was cleaning the dinning room and I saw my dad pass by the window. I quickly went out side to talk with him and he was no where around.

3. Another time I was washing dishes and saw my dad again pass by the kitchen window. Went out the back door and again he was no where to be found. (I was alone in the house again)

4. A few years ago I was at work enjoying my music and entering data in computer. Out of no where I saw my dad's face right in front of me, between the monitor and my face. I stopped in my tracks and co-workers asked me what happened. I told them and they just said maybe my dad was just thinking of me.

5. Now my sister and I both live outside of city limits and it is heavily wooded around here. I went to my sister’s house about ½ mile down the road with my son it was about 10:30 at night. No one was home but we went to check on the house. As we were getting back in my car. I heard my name loudly. I ignored it thinking it was in my head. But my son asked “Mom did you hear that? Some one just called your name.

How strange to find a thread about this on here as this happened to me only yesterday.... Walking through a corridor at work, I turned a corner and heard a female voice say my name. I looked back around the corner and there was a male work colleague there who I asked if he had said my name and he had not. This happens quite frequently with me, especially if I'm tired.:freak:

I read through this thread and found it very interesting. I also had an experience where a voice saved my life!

When I was 23, I was driving home from my college classes and turning left onto a busy road. While I was waiting for the light to turn green, an Ambulance was wailing it's sirens in the distance. When the light turned green, I moved forward cautiously looking to my right for the Ambulance and not paying attention to the oncoming traffic in front of me. I started to turn left while still looking to my right and a very loud voice yelled "turn right"! (I was all alone) At that second, I jerked the wheel right and barely missed the car coming at high speed head on. The driver blared his horn but only after I heard the voice and responded. I believe that I would have died or been seriously injured. It was the first time that I knew someone was looking out for me.

Now I also find this thread to be so very interesting. I for one have not had much when it comes to this type of experience with hearing my name called. But what I myself have experienced is that how often am I out somewhere deep in the wilds just living and enjoying life and I hear voices loud and clear and people seemingly talking. But when I look around and about, there is absolutely no one around whatsoever but just my lonesome self.

I also never remember hearing my name called but I WAS saved from killing two people.

I had just turned into my subdivision and was approaching a cross street. I had right of way and a stop sign was posted on the cross street. The man on the corner lot had Lilac bushes the were very old and very large. They completely blocked any view as they grew all along his fence line right to the corner

A voice in my head suddenly yelled STOP. I hit the brakes and as I did a motorcycle flew right across in front of me.....a young man with a girl hanging on for dear life on the back. My heart started thumping wildly in my chest as I realized how close I had come to klling those two people....they were no more than 10 feet from the front of my car

It happened again after that with another car....but not so dramatic as the first experience.

I now slow way down when I come to that corner ....twice is enough...

My son, on a regular basis asks me if I called him when he is coming out of his bedroom. He believes I am in the hallway calling his name. I say no and he says "Well, it's probably that spirit having fun again" Remember this is the house where things move around and rings disappear....The dog often looks down the hallway and barks at nothing...so Steve is probably right.

Funny, I was about to say something about this on my son's thread (Ian's story) because this happens to us all the time.

As a child, I used to hear my name being called, and it wasn't until it happened in the busy lunchroom at school that I realized my friends weren't experiencing it. Now it happens to my 5-year-old. He hears his name being called quite frequently. I've been in the room with him many times when this happens, and there is no 'normal' explanation for it.

To add to this, he sometimes specifically hears my voice, AND I specifically hear his voice. I don't hear my name anymore. I hear "Mom" very clearly, even loudly. Once, I heard him calling me, so I thought he'd arrived back home from being with Grandma. I yelled back a reply, but soon realized no one was home with me. When he finally did get home, I asked if he was talking about me in the car. He said no, but he'd been thinking about me.

(It's not always my voice he hears, though.)

Also, I've found that I'm increasingly predicting what he's about to say, no matter how random. Sweet connection!
