Consciousness, religion and science

I came across an article I thought had some interesting observations regarding consciousness, religion and science. Although not directly referenced to reincarnation I found the information quite interesting as we try to understand and debate the theory that is so dear to us. I am curious what you think about it. Interesting article, T-man! Good find!


Although I agree with Yehuda Berg, that Science and Spiritual awareness are slowly finding some common ground, I would not confuse the supposed long lifespans of the biblical Adam and Methusalech with any present day trend of growing consciousness. He also seems to be drawing some correlation between today's increasing lifespans and spiritual consciousness, which, I think, is a mistake.


It is my belief that longer lifespans are due largely to improvements in technology, which is driven by non-spiritual, materialist science. Although it can be argued that conscious awareness may be growing with the help of technology, I see no causal relationship between expanded consciousness and longer lifespans.

Dr. Kevin Nelson, a neurologist, has written The Spiritual Doorway in the Brain, a scientific work on oobe's and other mystical states.


Although he takes a more liberal approach than most, he still is in the pattern of basically materialistic scientific analysis.


I have sent him several messages and he has replied to one. I suggested that he read "Soul Survivor" and he has said he will do so.

I enjoyed reading about William James. He is one of my favorite philosophers. To paraphrase one of this key ideas:in order to disprove the assumption that all crows are back, the existence of only one white crow need be demonstrated.


It seems to me what we are dealing with here is the question of consciousness existing apart from the body. If it is shown that ONE case of automatic writing, poltergeist activity, ghostly manifestations denoting a degree of intelligence, should be shown to have occurred it disproves the assumption that bodily existence is necessary for intelligence to operate.

I agree with you Nightrain, insofar as our current concept of expanded consciousness is concerned. I do believe that as consciousness advances at a more rapid rate (similarly to the rate of increase in our technological knowledge) we will see a greater ability to consciously mend our physical bodies as we will have learned to consciously mend our mental bodies, and it seems to me that would enable an extension of the standard human lifetime.
