I have had the strong emotions happen to me. The first time I visited Hampton Court Palace, I hadn’t even reached the entrance gate when I was just overcome with strong tearful emotion and I had no explanation for it. But other than that I’ve not experienced it again yet.

What you described sounds very much like a Bascinet or possibly a close helmet/close helm which were used by knights and other men at arms in the medieval periods.
